Thanks for your information. I thought so too that it should be associate professor. But when i googled that term, it says assistant professor's ranking is just below associate professor. Kind of confusing to me cause we only have associate professor here. Anyways, thanks again.

I want to get doctoral course in Japan. In 2008 I had succeed master's degree and started education in second university (Oriental University in Moscow/Russia).
Could somebody please send me sample of research plan?
I'd write such "Present field of study":

I have two closely connected fields of study. My main specialization - fast agile industrial systems developement. Working in close collaboration with professors of my first university, I have been researching aspects of equipment design, processes of chemistry technology and studying machinery technologies.
My second field is information technologies. Over a long period of time I have been studying great variety of programming/scripting languages, developing platforms and environments. The result of interconnecting this two fields became my master's dissertation.
Besides, I am trying to keep up on all innovations in both field

Quick question: How are we notified of MEXT's final decision? Does the embassy call us? Do we received a letter from MEXT? or an e-mail? Do we need to call instead? I'm pretty sure that If I read somewhere in this thread I would probably find the answer, but let's face it, this thread is far too long and finding something specific in it is an arduous task.

Well, in my country, it's usually the embassy who calls us..since we won't know the exact date of the announcement itself.. But you might want to try calling your embassy, maybe want to ask when will they release the result..

hi all , actualy i have a query and i hope all of you will help me in this, actualy i am interested in a research proposal and research is actually going on in this topic by a professor , and one of the research students under the said professor is also doing a releated research , so i wanted to ask that should i contact the research student under that professor or should i contact the professor directly ?

also what are the subjects which you should suggest me to read apart from the releated feild like mathematics etc or just the releated subjects

I just got an email from my supervisor asking me if I wanted to do the language training or not. I'm having a bit of trouble deciding. Keio U has a really detailed, advanced language program, and there's no doubt they have classes beyond my level, so I could learn a lot. I'm worried about offsetting my research, though. I'm studying birds, and starting research in October is a huge, huge difference from starting it in April. I know I have enough Japanese to handle everyday conversation and discussions, even if I'm rusty now.

Sensei's going to get back to me on whether or not the level 1 JLPT will be necessary for entry into Keio's grad schools. He's a new prof, so he doesn't have the kind of clout menrui's seems to have. Current/past MEXTers, how did this go for you? Did anyone choose the training?
 
Honestly Akaitsume, having had the honor to listen to your beautiful and quite advanced Japanese before, I say skip the course. Most of what you'd need to learn, meaning what would be useful for your master's, consists of terminology you wouldn't find in a classroom setting. I think you can manage to pick it up as you go along.

What do you think?
 
I also just received this question from my tentative future boss. I heard the course can be quite intensive, and therefore time-consuming. I don't know what to do either, as I feel my boss is judging every move in the light of productivity, and to him 6 months of Japanese language courses may sound like 6 months of serious work lost. At the same time I'm curious to meet the other MEXT students and I may need the courses too..Will you guys take the course ?

Akaitsume, are you going to be in prof Watanabe's cognitive psychology lab ? I met him in Paris last week, he was here in November as an invited professor and I measured how cool it could have been choosing his lab for my thesis...Keio seems to be so comfortable compared to other universities. I didn't choose Keio as they say one has to put Keio as first and only choice to have a chance to get a positive answer. In fact now that I know better how it works I think this is not true, the main point being you actually have a contact with a professor and normally if he wants you to work with him he'll do everything to get you.

bharatsriv : I think you can contact the student to get information on how the things go in the lab and so on, and you will anyways have to contact the prof in the end (if you want to go to this lab).

relexey : the research plan is a document you should perfectly write, it cannot be quickly made unless your ideas are very clear, and must be detailed enough so you can prove your research is feasible and useful. You must seduce with your research plan (along with the other documents of the application) the specialists panel at the embassy first, then the professor you wish to study with, and finally the MEXT people.
 
Neo: I love you, too. Hahaha. You're right, the vocab is my main concern. Hopefully, I'll be able to do enough studying on my own to get my kanji reading back up, etc. And don't talk to me about awesome Japanese, since you're the one who dated a Japanese girl, lol.

Jeanmarie: No, I'm going to be working (hopefully) with Professor Ichinose on environmental science. That's cool that you found a relaxed professor from Keio, too. Mine is one of the single most helpful people I've run into in my life. If he were younger....hahaha. Just kidding. ^_^
 
JLPT level 1 *probably* won't be required for entry to your school.

If you were applying for admission by yourself, then it likely would, but for the government scholarship students, they tend to waive the requirement.

At my school, PhD candidates are technically not required to know ANY Japanese, as long as they can communicate with their advisors in English.

Since master's students have to take classes, which are mostly offered in Japanese, they are required to speak Japanese of course, but in my case, that was included in the interview portion of the entrance exam we were given.

If you already have a fair amount of experience with Japanese, you can probably pick up the more field-specific terms as you need them, so I think you could afford to skip the language training.

thank you for giving me such a wonderful suggestion , i am really thankful to you and i will try to contact the student in the professor's lab who is doing a research in the releated field.i was mainly concerned that it may happen that the professor might get offended as i contacted his student not him directly.
 

yea, ironically, in Japan, especially universities, JLPT is of no technical use =p
most important is being able to speak and communicate.
There are tonnes of japanese language programs on and off campus to help you, so they are not worried, it's just going to be a matter of time and whether you are serious in picking up the language. The learning environment is readily there for you.
 
Kyoto University - which dorm?

I have just been accepted into Kyoto University. I'm having trouble choosing the dormitory. Has anyone lived in Shugakuin, Uji, or Obaku dorms? I will be grateful if you could give me some information about the places. Is it old or new? Western-style bathroom or japanese? I am interested in Shugakuin, as the faculty is at Yoshida campus.

helo peeps, i've been following this blog closely since last year(last month, actually ) and i'm really glad to have found so much information about the MEXT scholarship. i'm just curious about how many applicants have been under the [Social Science & Humanities] category so far, because so far i havent been able to have seen any, or maybe i'm not aware of any.
i would like to discuss and exchange information about applying for this category, so i shall wait for your reply~

ps btw i'm about to apply for this March's session >w<
 
Hello Kanzy,

I'll hopefully be researching Japanese television drama series in Japan soon. I would be at a social and cultural studies department. I'm not sure if it makes any difference from the others though. The requirements are the same: a good research plan, decent scores on tests and at uni and do well at the interview.

I would imagine that most people who study humanities and social sciences come from either Europe or the US. Maybe that's why you have the feeling that everyone is studying science or arts. On this forum, a lot of people come from Southern Asia and I must say that I also get the same impression: everyone seems to be studying science.

thanks loads for the replies i didnt realise there were so many other branches to social sciences~~ i'm glad i'm not the only one now

it seems that you all have narrowed down your studies. i want to study music, especially song arrangements and composition

but that aside, the research paper that i would write- what should it be about...? a future topic that i would research on? :? if that's the case then it would be something like my study plan already, won't it...? =X someone please enlighten me >.<
