My father is japanese and my mother is swede.
I was actually born and raised in sweden.
But my family will move to japan next summer.

My question is....what do ordinary japanese people think about half japanese?

I'm also half japanese/filipino so i liked to know the anwser too as well i think they are great! we are all people i doesnt matters where you come from we are all people and friends

My two kids are half Japanese and half Kiwi ( which is in my case Scottish and Maori ) My son is going to Kindy now, and he gets on fine with all the kids. If there are any problems between him and them they are because of personality clashes and not race. I hope it continues this way for him.
I myself have to say, that I have never really experienced racism in all the years I've been here either. I find the Japanese to be kind, courteous and quite tolerant, despite the popular xenophobic stereotypes we like to apply to them.

Well I am half-Japanese, and some friends in Japan say that they consider me Japanese, and some others treat me as foreign. The fact is that I am not Japanese. Moreover, although I feel Japanese when I am in Holland, I feel more like a Dutchman when in Japan.

If you have a nationality other than the Japanese you will get discriminated against by authorities no matter if you're half, 10% or non-Japanese. Nothing serious though, unless if you plan on living in Japan. (This is all second-hand info, so don't flame me if you think otherwise.)

Not going to flame you here but ask why do you feel or think that way?

I know numerous people that have "mixed" blood, my kids (3) included. They do not and never have had any experiences with being discriminated against in their entire lives. Not to say that it wont happen in the future, but discrimination and bullying happens at all levels of Japanese society and not just to those that are "mixed".

I know of "pure" blooded Japanese people that get more crap than you believe, 2nd generation, can't speak a lick of Japanese and get dirty looks and are discriminated against.

Sure there is the odd chance that something may or may not happen but it isn't something that one should have to be so overly concerned about.

All that matters is what you think of yourself.

Well yeah, some things are just off-limits aren't they? My brother had trouble finding an appartment so he ended up signing up for one under his girlfriend's (now wife) name. That sort of stuff. I believe nationality is also an issue when you want to make a loan. My father (full Dutch) complained about that when he wanted to do some arbitrage on the Yen, he wasn't allowed to borrow any money!!

Again, I haven't experienced it myself so I do not know the fine details, and I think that there are some appartments rentable by foreigners, or loans for foreigners. I just have the impression that they're harder to find or that there are more restrictions when you don't have the Japanese nationality.

Could very well be for some, I also am aware that a lot of it has to do with the location in Japan as well. I feel kind of sorry for your brother.

I do know however with regards to the "loans" anyway many of the banks and lending institutions won't lend money to foreigners unless they have permanent residency status here, along with an income that can be verified.

I know it stinks, and there is little that can be done about it, but I wonder how many other countries in the world are similar to Japan in these areas?

Good question actually. Well I know the Dutch aren't that difficult about renting (40% of the population in Rotterdam is of foreign descent), probably equally easy about loans.. But I am not sure!! Have to check it out whenever I have the time...
