MEXT Scholarship for Postgraduate 2011: General Discussions.

Fingers crossed, right :-) I kinda don't get that part with the budget cuts. This year the number of recommendations is lower and as far as the information given to us by the foundation, that covered the budget cuts. But then again considering "the vast amount" of information during the selection process........
Congratulations for the LOAs btw (I am getting the feeling that I am the only person who actually sent a single request for LOA :eek: , ne) and good luck

In fact, the number of recommendations was the same, according to the statistics from previous years:
Български стипендианти в Япония
I'm afraid they won't keep the same numbers for 2010/2011, so someone will have to stay, with or without LOAs.

As for your single request, it's the right thing to do, because Keio demands to write them as first and only wish.

To everyone who got LOAs, congrats!! =) lets hope that we all pull through no matter how bleak things seem. @ boradibo: You're not alone.. I also only have one LOA >_<

As PeterSimon and Jophillia I have only one LOA (Keio was my choice)

Guys, I've established an MSN chatting group with some active members in it of our pre-scholars of MEXT 2011 for faster news and discussion and others. If some of you guys use MSN messenger, I would be glad if you could send your msn account/ hotmail address to me so I could invite you into the chatting group!

does it have to be msn? I haven't used mine for a long time because there are many viruses and spams in msn... Can you add YM account?

I'll send my msn but please don't stop sharing information in this topic...

This topic is an important reference to every person searching for MEXt scholarship information, so please keep on posting.

👍

Yes, please.😄 As ykk says, this site (as far as i can find) is the most complete (dare to exagerate) and useful and full of information and experience from people that know about Mext first-hand. I myself learned a lot only by reading some two-year worth of posts (even though i`ll apply for the scholarship in two years` time).
So, keep posting please.😌

Yeah...totally agree. The posts in this forum helped me a lot in the course of preparation so it's just fair to contribute and help future applicants in the same way.

That's great :) Which graduate school if it's OK to ask? :)
Oh and btw though it does say on the Keio web page that they give LoA to "only those who give the name of "Keio University" as your FIRST and ONLY choice on "Application Form (Attachment)"." It's not really true because mine had 2 more universities on it besides Keio (just in case)

It's Media and Governance.

You had more universities other than Keio in your form and still got the LOA?

Media and Governance!!!!! 👍 WOW me too ;) 🙂
Yes I had two more written on the form but I only sent request for LoA to Keio (talk about gamble) and surprisingly got it. I just wrote down the other two in case i couldn't be placed at Keio since it the Monbukagakusho that's has the final decision.

hey ho!

I've got another question. I think some of you do speak and read Japanese quite well. I actually just started learning Hiragana...
So could anyone of you be so kind and translate what the profs wrote on the back of my LOAs? I am really wondering what they wrote... I've got them scanned as pdfs - so if anyone would be so kind and send me your email address as a pm so that I could forward it to you that would be a great help!

Thank you a lot in advance and I'd invite you for a sake over there in Japan!

Ooo, ykk and boradibo, you're coming to my campus/grad school! Maybe I can show you around when you get here. ^_^

MEXT has released further details from the budget request for 2011. They are as follows:

- the number of newly accepted scholarship foreign students will be decreased from 5980 to 4364 people (about 1600 less);
- the number of newly accepted students for the university graduate level will be 3594 people;
- the scholarship will be 150 000 yen for research students, 152 000 yen for master course and 153 000 yen for doctoral course;

Note that this is a budget request, not the final budget. The numbers in the end could be even smaller.

Thanks for the update. Did they say for how long they are going to keep these numbers?

These are only for 2011. Another decrease is very likely in 2012, as the numbers have been progressively falling over the last few years. Japan's just out of money, that simple.

Informations about scholarships number reduction made me crazy and I can't support waiting.Is it possible to know before february if we'll get scholarship (through universities if Mext contact them for example)?I read somewhere that we can know it in december but I'm not sure.

Thanks for the detailed info PeterSimon. I have checked again the budget plan that was just released by MEXT on their website. But I just found the info on the 4364 research student and 500 undergraduate student that they will take in the next year. As I've seen a certain budget amount allocated to the regional bonus, I guess they will still have the +2000 to 3000JPY regional bonus for MEXT students, right?
Anyway, I'm curious about the detailed info on the reduction of 2000JPY in general for all research student. Can you show me the link to the info on the scholarship amount next year on the website of MEXT?
Thanks in advance, again!

It's on the budget request file (gaisan youkyuu), page 1000+ something, maybe 1006.
I'm actually surprised that they're only taking away 2000 yen. Considering that just 4 years ago the same scholarship was 172 000 yen, I thought that it would become 140-145 000 for the next year. Oh, well, maybe in 2012.

Yeah, you are right. It's in page 1005. Lucky that they haven't cut the regional bonus.
