MEXT Scholarship for Postgraduate 2011: General Discussions.

Congrats YYK! =D I am also in the same boat and I have requested for one LoA as well. Am quite worried but I guess I will just have to see how things go =x

Wishing you the best of luck all the way! Hope that somehow we can all meet each other in Japan next year! :D

hello everybody!
They called me and told me that someone had a problem and now I am a elegible candidate for the scholarship! yeaaaay!!! hoorrayyy!
👍👍👍
I AM THE HAPPIEST PERSON IN ARGENTINAAAAAAAAAAA!
I've scanned all the documents and sent the forms to my fav prof @ Keio Daigaku and changed my preferences to only him.
Question:
Should I still try to get any other LOA from other universities? I've already changed my preferences in my attachment form, is that OK? I'm taking a big risk just trying to get only one LOA but Keio's rules say that you have to choose their university as only and first choice 😌
I am worried I've came so far and now I am putting all my hopes in one LOA...
thank you all very much for your support all this year (and the previous!!!)
Wow, congradulations, ykk. You are like the luckiest girl in the world!!! Looks like nothing is impossible if there is a willing heart. After several trials previous, finally!!!

Thank you guys for all the congratulations, you've followed all my posts since the beggining of this story. I'm going to treat you all good Argentine Cuisine when we get to Japan! I am actually very good.
It's a promise! Let's all meet in Japan!
:D:D:D:D THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU

Unfortunatly I think that if your spouse get Mext scholarship you couldn't apply for the scholarship.
I saw in the forum that Mext will reduce number of scholarship this year.Does anyone confirm this?

#Habi- I am sure that only one spouse can be granted a scholarship. You can read more in the instructiones leaflet.
#sat- I don`t know that, but their plan is to increase the number gradually over the years.

Finally got 1 LOA!! Though it happened only after I wrote a mail to the administration, pushing them to give results faster.
Now, should I write a similar pushing mail to Todai's administration, if their site says "Don't ask us, we don't answer mails about the results"?...

hey people what do you think about TOEFL scores? i didn't find anything, but did MEXT ever defined what score should someone have?

You don't need a TOEFL score for this scholarship, but some universities want it when you decide to advance to a graduate course later.

BTW, since someone asked if the number of scholarships has decreased: I checked, and yes, MEXT is accepting 1400 scholarship students less for the next year. -_-

Hi, Peter. Just wondering where do you get this source of information? And do you know if the reduction in number of 1400 is in the number of new students they gonna accept for year 2011? That would be bad for most of us in this thread.

From the budget plans uploaded on their site.
And yes, the decrease is for the next fiscal year. This year there was a decrease too, compared to last year. Japan's running out of money.

That's worrying >_< Does this mean that the news of the budget decrease is also true?

I hope that the situation won't be that the scholarship committee cuts down the number of prospective scholars at the secondary screening by MEXT. I really hope that our respective embassies have already been given quotas as to the number of students to recommend before the start of the whole scholarship selection process. If it is the latter case *i hope*, rejection risk at this stage would not be so high.

*worried*

I've seen their budget plan. It's the total number of MEXT students next year. But they didn't say anything about the number of new planned recipients for next year.
Maybe it doesn't change that much.

I would be really appreciated if some of us could call the embassy about it!
If this is true, more could be turned down in the 2nd screening than ever before.
I tried to contact MEXT asking this, but haven't got any reply yet.
Indeed, I have been worried since I notice this number change which doesn't happen previously!

Thanks for the news. I hope you`re right and change their mind next year. Is this because of the economical crisis? I know they cut the stipend, but now the quota too?

I'm not sure if they cut the new quota or it happens to be there will be a large number of the MEXT students graduated next year. I hope it's the latter case so it wouldn't affect us, the 2011 batch.

No, check the Heisei 23rd year budget request at their site (Japanese version). It clearly says that government-sponsored scholarship students (foreigners) will be reduced to about 10 000 people, which is about 1400-1500 less than last year. Accordingly, the money planned for scholarships are also reduced. And that's still a "budget request", not the final budget draft which will come in December, although if you check for last year, they kept the same number of scholarships between the request and the draft (still decreased compared to the year before, however).
This can't be only "a large number of graduating students", such a decrease means fewer will enter at the other side.
I don't know if MEXT has set the quota for each country when the embassies made the first screening, I'd like to think so, because we were told the quota here was decreased from 12 to 11 people.

I guess they`re switching for quality over quantity, which is a pity because 11 people is a small number for an entire country. 😭 (don`t know the quota for my country now, but in the previous years it was about 8 people)

Thanks a lot, Petersimon for providing us the info from your embassy.
I was told that the quota for my region is set to be 4 candidates and 2 alternates for the previous 7 years and no candidate recommended by the embassy has ever failed the second screening. It seems that my embassy still will recommend 4 students this year according to the quota. Anyway, I will try to ask the lady in charge to confirm the quota thing and also if she knows about the total decrease in number of the planned recipients.
It would be good if the quota given to each embassy is decreased accordingly to their budget. The worse thing I fear of is that the quota remain the same as in last year which means a much larger percentage of us failing in the second screening than the 2% or around possibility in the previous years.
If you guys have time, pls try to call the embassy about it.

regarding the change of the number of mext scholars and budget.

i am also worried that they wont let me pass the second screening, altoug i received 2 LoAs and 1 Letter of Acceptance to enter a PhD program at Todai directly.

from what I know here in Austria they changed the number from 5 to 3 people who get recommended by the embassy from 2010 to 2011. this would reflect the budgetary decrease already.

this is some devastating news, i should call the coordinator here tomorrow to check out the quota. still i think the results from primary screening plays the biggest role in ensuring we pass the secondary screening

btw, any Malaysian grantees can confirm about our embassy having to meet the quota set by MEXT for their reccomendations?

Mind to let me know the outcome once you call the embassy tomorrow? So I don't need to bombard Ms. Yin with the same question and get her frustrated.
All I know is that they recommended 33 candidates this year compared to 30 candidates last year.

@blurcheryl

yeah i will post it here after i asked..im reading the previous scholars' discussion now. the thing is, what is the quota of recommendation for our country? Since from what i've read, the budget for foreign students' admission decreases annually but we have more recommendations this year, which is confusing.
