Hi there, sorry for the late reply, i just sat for my japanese language intensive course final examinations this morning (those embassy recommendations scholars, u guys better be prepared for this course). after 4 months of this class, i hve to say it is pretty intense, my classes are daily from 9.30am to 4.15 pm with only an hour break in between but overall i really do hve fun and ultimately think my japanese has improved tremendously though i have to admit i wish i would know more then my level right now.dont worry, the classes are not only about learning hundreds of kanji and grammar but they do make it interesting with other classes such as japanese culture where we got to watch good japanese films,listen to japanese songs and basically just share our ideas with the sensei. we have conversations class where we are just required to talk..so its not only bout studying but basically just hve fun while adapting ownself to the japan life..my classmates are all monbusho scholars from all over the world and it is really nice to have new frens going through the same experience with u..
prettybunny, bout the english requirements i suppose it differs according to the university policy so i do advise u to check with your faculty support office for the confirmations. well in the case of my university, a fren of mine who is a canadian is asked to hand either toeic, ielts or toefl for his entrance so i guess u better be sure bout tht matter.the easiest way if u do not want to directly contact the support office is just to check the respective university website..i bet all the university has its own websites and u guys can check for its respective requirements earlier..
akira 0404, regarding the 90% probability, well i was referring especially to those with embassy recommendations..i mean of course some things might go wrong somewhere and u might not go but still the odds r pretty low..and my point was dont lose your sweat over this matter.worrying whether am i going or not..and i say this becos it was based on my own experience.. i was exactly like u guys doubting this whole issue and just told myself it is not finalized yet so i didnt do any preparations becos i wanted to wait for the final green light..wht happenedd the final green light came about 2 months before my departure and i end up doing all the preparations last minute and the one i truly regret was i wasnt really mental prepared for it and then all sudden i found myself going in less then 2 months..so my advise if it is possible just start to do preparations, buy some stuffs stages by stages and more importantly prepare urself mentally...
ekoy, im doing pretty fine here in hiroshima....well the weather is pretty intense this summer but other then that im doing ok..like i said before, it is definately not an easy ride but i will face it somehow...
@Kellylen, Are you at Hiroshima University? Did you do the intensive japanese training there? How do you like it there? Barring not getting rejected by MEXT I plan on studying at Hiroshima next year
how about adding things up in facebook or creating a group, that way it would be much easier and we can get to know each other first
Hi again! I passed the interview successfully and the embassy will recommend me. I have two important questions now:
1. I'm having quite some troubles with finding a professor who's willing to take me (the ones I wrote to refused). What happens if I don't get LoA from a Japanese university? Is it true that the embassy will not send their recommendation to MEXT then?
2. About the academic transcript: my local university issues two different diplomas (for undergraduate and graduate/master courses). They go with different academic transcripts for each of the levels. I have applied with my master diploma and submitted the academic transcript for the master course. Is there a possibility that the Japanese universities might say my documents are incomplete, because I haven't submitted the academic transcript of the undergraduate level as well (although they're in different fields of study and from different faculties of the university)? The embassy is okay with this, but what are the Japanese universities going to say?

Not at all. Several people on this forum failed to get LOAs and kept the scholarship. Basically, if you can't find a place, MEXT will locate one for you. It's more nerve-wracking, to be sure, but by no means are you going to be denied the scholarship just because you couldn't secure a letter of acceptance.
Universities typically only care about your transcripts for the last place you went. It probably wouldn't hurt to turn in your undergrad transcript, but the last degree is the most important one. Sort of like how your high school transcript wasn't necessary to get into grad school. It's the same here in Japan, as far as I know.

Japanese Studies Scholarship is completely different. All people who pass a certain level of the Japanese test go directly, there's really no further screening. Of course, they all pass also an interview in the embassy, but usually all of them get recommended.
While now, we're 18 people for an interview next week, and we've been told that 11 people will get the recommendation and the others will not (substitutes included, because they rarely make it). So it's not even Monbusho deciding, it's the embassy directly killing off the overquota people.
Or, they might give the recommendation to 13 people, expecting that 2 will fail to obtain LoAs or withdraw.

Just wondering, are the substitutes will also be recommended to MEXT? Or they will wait until someone from their country can't make it and they will be recommended to MEXT. Reading from the posts earlier, It seems to me that only the Developed countries have alternates(substitutes).

They mailed it last July 21. Just wondering, how many took the interview in Manila? By the way, I took the interview in Cebu.
I think you missed my point. Recommendation != guaranteed spot.
Just because they give 11 (or 13) a recommendation, doesn't mean that MEXT HAS to grant everyone a scholaship. Sure, maybe there is a recommendation quota for each country, but that's up to the consulate to decide. The consulate, however, can't decide how many will actually recieve the scholarship. That's for MEXT to decide.

But then on the other hand, all who recieved the recommendation might also recieve the scholarship! I wish you luck PeterSimon and I hope you will get it. Congratulations on the recommendation!
Personally, I'm also waiting for a final confirmation from MEXT. It's nerv breaking.

Hey, for your questions on the loa, just leave all the things in blank and the graduate school office will fill all of them out for you if you can pass their screening process for MEXT embassy students.I just joined. I had a question: Have any of you received LOA's? If so, do you know whether or not any part of this form must be filled in by us (the student) before we send it over to our advising professor in Japan?
I am sure that someone who has already gone through this process will know, and I would imagine the LOA's look the same regardless of the country.
