MEXT Scholarship for Postgraduate 2010: General Discussions.

hi clipvain, thanks. i did search through the Uni homepage and read the professors' research area before email them. i think i should mention i'm open to other research theme since mine is too specific.

for one of the professor who rejected me, i asked if he has any recommendation, he did send me a webpage link to list of all professors in his Uni.

sending... sending... sending to more professors trying to get one acceptance... =)

wah good luck in your professor search
im not in the mood to do that... yet
atleast until i get the interview result

i dint think i do well in the interview
the professor from UM keep arguing with me about my research and always look dissatisfy with my answer. more or less the same as my last year interview (which i didnt make it) haha

ナ?テヲ窶卍」窶堙≫?堙??堙仰!From what the previous applicants said, this is the most difficult stage in the entire process.... Hang on there!

tomayto, clipvain >

ya, some professors not replying email promptly... we may have to wait weeks or months before they reply. during my interview timeslot, most of the applicants i met already got professors' acceptance, so it is actually quite late to start finding professor now.

It is a challenge to get University's Official Letter within one month (according to Ms.Yin, we have to get it within one month IF we pass the interview). so, that's why I start contacting professors first even though I'm not sure whether i can pass the interview... if not passing, we still can tell the professor politely that we didn't get the scholarship, no loss. =)

some professors may not reply at all. If he/she doesn't reply with in a week, you should move on.

yes, getting a LoA within one month is a challenge. That "one month" is most likely in September. Which is within summer holiday. So there is a small chance the prof might not be there. Also, there are 3 national holidays in september, so many will take the whole week off.

Hi menrui
As discussed earlier here, my research theme is too specific, should i mention in my 1st email to professors that i'm open to the research topics they currently doing? should i include my documents in 1st email? academic transcript? research proposal? resume?

by the way, can we change the research theme (i mean different with the one we submitted in application forms)?

thanks!

for the first couple of questions, my answer is: you could, I don't see any problem in that.

When do you plan on changing it? After you receive the scholarship, you can do ask you like within your research group.

Just got the notification that I was chosen as an alternate.

So, what if they come in March and say: "congratulations, one of the recipients chose to stay at home with his gf!" Do they look for a university and everything?
I'm not too keen on doing my best trying to get a LOA knowing that I won't get the scholarship unless a miracle happens...

miao you know when is the interview result going to be release?

That day before interview, we asked Ms.Yin, she said result will out end of July.
among 65 attending interview, 30 will be selected.

forgot to mention, all 65 and 30 = postgraduate.

End of July... That would be in about 2 weeks time. Fingers crossed everyone!

Hi peeps,
Went for the exams today. English was very easy, no trick questions.
But the Japanese one turned out to be a disaster! There wasn't enough time to read through everything, and the passages were not that easy!
I hope I did not just blow my chance away.....

haha... clipvain, don't worry too much. since the japanese paper was so difficult, i don't think many manage to answer it well. so, you all have the equal chance!
tell u, in my japanese test, i made guessing for most of the answers too.

heee im not sure if ur words are making me feel better or not... but let's cross out fingers and hope for the best! results (of who makes it to the interview) will be out by Friday, and I'm so going to stick to my mobile and turn into a mail checking maniac

Friday, wau.. that's fast! wish you all the best!

clipvain, good luck!
I hope Friday comes fast. I know what you mean about being a mail-checking maniac!

finding professors

When do you plan on changing it? After you receive the scholarship, you can do ask you like within your research group.

Since my proposed research theme was very specific, it is hard to get a professor doing exactly the research. So, i'm wondering if i'm allow to change my topic. If allowed, then I can tell the professors that i'm open to their research topics. (from all the previous posts, i got an answer... which is we are allowed to change the research topic, am i right?) :?

by the way, from you guys' last year's posts, it was mentioned that it is disrespect to contact many professors at a time. but... although i emailed to more than 10 professors, i not yet get any positive reply from them. so... i'm thinking of email to more professors while waiting for the reply. (can someone tell me, what i'm doing is alright?)

any tips on how you all got the professors' reply successfully? or was it all by luck?
it was lucky that the professor you emailed replied you, it was unlucky that the professor I emailed not replied me.

clipvain, good luck!

haha... clipvain, i totally understand your mean too... I'm now a mail-checking maniac!

miao & Rica: Thanks!!
if i'm not bad with counting, there were abt 18 of us today, and eventually 3 nominees.

And as others have said it umpteen times, there's nothing we can do except to.... wait.
I guess I finally know how u guys must be feeling all this while!

i emailed a few professor last year and only one reply... and fortunately he willing to be my supervisor.
i think its a bit of luck for my side. i heard a lot of stories of difficulties in contacting professor. another ways is by contacting the department/ school to help in initiating contact with the professor. my idea is try to wait for a week or so and if there is still no respond move on with another professor.

wao... that's good news that there is professor willing to be your supervisor. how i wish i have one too.
i think what i can do now is just waiting for the professors... until the interview result comes out...

good luck to all of you! my exam & interview is on July, 27.

Good luck to everyone, I got put on the reserve list. Rather frustrating really.
