MEXT Scholarship for Postgraduate 2010: General Discussions.

they want to know how to pronounce my name... I'm guessing they want to write in Hiragana, is this a good or bad sign?

he said they'd call me with the results later... omg... this is so nerve-wrecking...

sounds like good news to me, don't you think?

i just refreshed and found u got THE call!
congrats!!! and you still have abit more to go, ganbattene!

Good for you PetiteM.

Today, I took the English test and it was easy. However the time is limited so it could be good idea starting from question 4, after 5, then 5 and 3. Finally, 1 and 2; I am upset because the guy on the side was copying at me. Cheater!!!
I did not take the japanese test because I forgot my basics on that language. I focus myself on the English test, so I swear they (the embassy) call me.
Good luck for all guys...

congrats petitem. I'm surprised they would give out the embassy recommendation so soon.
But keep in mind, that isn't the "final" result. Next you have to get acceptance from a prof/univ. Then your application will be sent to MEXT in Tokyo. They will do a final review and then give you the final results in Dec~Feb.

However, your chances are rather high(dare I say, greater than 98%?) after your receive the recommendation. Even if you don't find a prof/univ. I only know of one person who was declined after the recommendation... twice, and his position was replaced. We don't know the reason why, but my guess is that it was because he had already received a government scholarship in the past. But he did meet a criteria that should have allowed him to still receive it...

thanks everyone! but as Menrui said, we're not out of the woods yet!

im having a very hard time finding professors' contact information to write to. I wanted to find some biographies about the professors id like to work with but everything seems to be in japanese, so im going to have to ask the embassy for some language assistance if this keeps up. Contacted the dean of the Osaka university of arts requesting his help finding the professors that teach the major I want, hope its not a social faux pas...

anyways enough rambling! i got more contacting to do!!

yeah, i often hear that finding a prof + getting the letter of acceptance is the most difficult phase for some people-- but i am sure you will be able to find the information you need! what subject are you looking for?

Japanase test?

PetiteM

I was wondering if you had taken the japanase test by the time of the english test? I did not took that so I am scared...

A

hey sbe! my major is fine arts with emphasis on digital so im basically looking for Illustration and Japanese printing techniques courses in Fine Arts schools such as Tama Arts or OUA My main goal is world creation (storytelling/character and world design/mythology) geared towards interactive implementation (read making games/videogames ;P )

Hey Alejandro!
I did have to take the japanese test at the same time as the english one; but from what im told, they take the higher score out of the 2 and qualify people based on that might be different in your country tho! 23 ppl here made it to the test, and only 11 to the interview. 4 were chosen in the end.

hope it helps!
Can anyone help me out with the contacting prof part?

there definitely is little to no information on the english pages, so you have to look on the japanese ones. i sometimes use the google "translate this page" to look at things there-- it is far from perfect, but it helps!

Which University is OUA? I know Tama and it's one of my choices, but never heard of OUA.
I'm a graphic designer.

bye!

Its nice to see some positive attitude here. Congratulations PetiteM and all others who have completed the interview phase!!

Personally, my interview and test are coming up in 2 weeks! I am scrambling to prepare as much as I can. I am a little bit worried about my wear. I do realise that it has to be formal, but to what extent?Should I buy a new suit for the interview? I heard Japanese are very picky on outer appearances during interviews....

oh sure! I've checked their website. They don't have a media departament so it is out of my choices.
All the Universities I've chosen are in Tokyo, it was kind of a coincidence but definiely it's my fav city in all Japan after all

Hi everyone

Sorry to bother again with a stupid question... I notice some embassies give a very clear time line of result of document screening, the test and interview dates, etc on their website. The thing is, Japanese embassy in my country doesn't provide that (they don't even provide email address @_@), and the information itself is different from people that we asked. One of my friends asked officer A while I asked officer B, and both gave different answers with what has been stated on website. So confusing.

Hence, I just want to know, what is the rough estimation of the time between deadline and result of document screening in your country? I know it might be different from my country, but I suppose it will be a good estimation of how long we should wait for the result..

Thank you in advance

In Argentina is different from other countries:
- Deadline is on June 31st.
- The exams are in the first week of July and the interview is the same day for those who passed the exams.
- The results of the selected candidates are given away in the second week of July.

The process is short and quick, because candidates must get the Letter of Acceptance by the end of August.

If you don't feel very confident about the information given in the embassy my advice is to ask the name of the person and confront him/her with the other person giving you a diffrent answer.

@ykk

Wow, that's fast. So you only have one week to prepare for the exams and interview on the same day. Deadline in Indonesia was May 22. My friend asked on that day and got an answer that the result will be out around mid June, while when I asked just today, the lady even told me to call again next month O_O.

Thanks for the advice . I think we both will call the embassy again next Monday.

Well, I've been preparing for this since march. Everybody can take the exam, there isn't any elimination process before that. BUT you must wait about 2 hours until they give away the names of the people selected for the interview. Longest 2 hours of your life, yeah...

I hope you can get the information at least 2 weeks in advance! still, get prepared for the exam and interview anyway. You should be ready even if they tell you "it is tomorrow"
Another advice: I called so many times the embassy that I think everybody hated me. If you want to know and want to call everyday ask someone to do it for you (a friend, a relative...)

Yay! IT'S IN!!!!!
Wow, the package ended up being over half a kilo... My research proposal was 7 pages!
Overkill is good... right?
Now for the English test and hopefully an interview! Thanks to V__ for the advice, by the way.
Good luck everyone!

@Rica
Good luck for you!

@ykk
My friend just called the embassy and a guy there said that the announcement of document screening will be out on early July. It is a bit longer than last year's timeline though.

Thanks for the advice. Let's pray for the best for all of us

Well, I din't even make it to the interview/tests phase ! I'm really surprised, so I sent an email to ask what was wrong, hope they answer back. Good luck for the rest of you!
