Hi Skyboard!

I'm not in your same situation (well... except for the part that we both don't know japanese ), but it is my understanding that MEXT gives a final decision by February and you would be going to japan in April. You have about a month and a half to train your replacement and quit your job. It's a short time, I know, but is better than no time.

We'll be receiving a "tentative" decision around December. It is very unlikely that you would be rejected if you receive a letter from MEXT around this time. But I wouldn't recommend that you take steps based on that letter. I, for one, will only have for certain that I'm going to Japan when I have my visa and my flight ticket in my hands. :-D

I am in kind of the same situation. Fortunately I have a very understanding boss who will support me when I do get the scholorship. Otherwise I would also have had to quit my job, but I decided on that before applying. We are still young and there will be other chances for a job but none for getting a scholarship.

And that time is drawing near!! . I think everybody is a bit anxious (and that's an understatement in my case) about it, but I really think that everyone who got selected by the embassy and has a LoA from any University is as good as gone... to Japan of course . I think only a major cut in MEXT's budget will jeopardize our spring sunsets watching cherry blossoms ...

Well aside form that, I have a question about the monthly stipend. Does anyone know, how many days could pass between our arrival in Japan and our first "allowance" from MEXT? XD. I don't think we'll get the money as soon as we reach the airport, but I would like to count on that money real soon, because basically, that money will pay my meals in Japan

Hmm I don't know about you but I usually use Instant or Cup noodle to counter that problem of yours..
 

Yeah, it's getting very near now.. although I'm not sure that next month is going to be a final announcement or we will still have to wait till next year :?

I'll be studying Media Design at Hiyoshi campus (at least I hope so!).

I am waiting patiently at the moment, I figure stressing about it isn't going to change the outcome at this point.

I am going to miss my favourite noodles MI GORENG! I'm sure Japanese instant noodles will be just as good though.

@SOLDIER1st - I believe from my reading that we can't rely on receiving any money in our first month, we are recommended to take enough money to last that long.

you get the scholarship after about a month. you will have to endure before then.

Yeah, they're in the supermarket here. Uni students live off them! The chicken curry flavour is pretty awesome, and that Java one, but the original flavour is still the best. I'm too soft to add the chilli sachets though! Maybe we will have to get someone to send them over for us!
 
hi all..

my boss keeps asking me the result of the monbukagakusho. I hope the final result is out in December, either good or bad news.. untill now I am busy at work without making any preparation for the research yet o__O
 
In the application papers they give the advice to bring about 1,500 US$ for the first days, so I don't count on the money from the scholarship during the first few weeks.

So i hope we'll meet there. I think, I would be at Yagami campus just beside Hiyoshi campus.
 

Chicken curry, lol xD. Yes, I am also wondering (if we can really go to Japan) how much of MI GORENG that I can pack in my suitcase cause surely it will be my daily meals later xD. They're too delicious (and cheap xD).

Danke schon , I already knew about the $1500. I've read those papers a bunch of times. I think It's really important to know what you can and cannot expect from the scholaship, so I really recommend to all of you to read carefully those documents. You don't wanna have "uncomfortable" surprises thousands of miles away from your home

However, I thought that was just a countermeasure in case we didn't get the money on time, but menrui (thanks man!) made it clear that the 1500 are a must, unless you don't need to eat

Hope everyone gets good news in the next few weeks

One of my seniors at Tsukuba Uni said that 1-2 months before MEXT officially announces the result, your professor should sign an agreement with MEXT that h/she agrees to take you as a research student. By that time, it should be confirmed that your scholarship is on its way.

I wonder if it's polite enough to ask about this to your professor .. I feel uncomfortable if I were about to ask my professor, but the waiting without any news is a bit stressful >.<

Btw, is it normal if we are going to have the announcement on December? I know that usually the announcement takes place sometime around Jan/Feb, but I don't know why my embassy said the result is going to be announced on December.. and it didn't sound like that it's going to be unofficial result..

I didn't know about that. I reckon you should send an email to your professor and let us all know. If noone is willing to do this, Ill go ahead and send my email to my supervisor.

I also heard that the result would be coming out in december officially. I hope thats the news.
 
Now this is thrilling....

Let's define when the official announcement will come. Some says they will be announced officially in Feb. so 1-2 month before will be around December, which is then the news about the embassy (at least in my country) will know about our results can be confirmed.

But if the definition for official announcement is around December...Well according to what Nyfa said then by now our Professor should know the answer, shouldn't they ?

When I browsed around the "Monbukagakusho for postgraduate" thread in the past, I did read one applicants was told by his/her Professor that the Professor was called by MEXT. I do forgot when it posted though, I think around November/December last year

Anyway if anyone get the news ahead, it would be great if you can post it here
 
My understanding (in the US, at least) is that in December we get the tentative acceptance, and in late January to mid- February we'll get the official acceptance.

I think if you manage to get a yes in December, though, you're good.

Well, I was planning to.. But I feel a bit uncomfortable doing it since I don't know whether it's appropriate to ask such question for Japanese. I am afraid that my professor will feel like I'm rushing him..

As for my senior's case, it wasn't because she asked her professor directly that she managed to get such an info. She just happened to email-ed her prof for New Year greetings and updated her prof about her situation at that time that was still waiting for confirmation/news, and then her professor spilled the news that he already signed some kind of letter from MEXT few weeks before she email-ed him. It was on December 2007 that her professor signed the letter, and she got final (and only) confirmation around mid February 2008. So she reckoned that's how the process goes : 1-2 months before the official announcement is out, your professor should sign a letter first..

But then again, I'm as curious as hell >.< I wonder what excuse I should use now to email my (probably future) professor while casually slipping in some updates about my current situation...Asking for more paper about his research? xD
