Metal Detecting in Japan

Does anyone know if it's ok to metal detect in Japan??? I have a friend who is planning to visit japan as a tourist and wants to bring a metal detector along and search the beaches and a few other areas. He doesn't know if he can bring a metal detector into the country. Anyone have an answer for this?

I asked the same thing back in 2003 and got few answers. My guess is, there will be a website (in Japanese) for a Japanese metal detecting club somewhere in Japan. I'm sure there must be rules on where/when/ and what you can keep, metal detectors have been around for years and most countries have rules about found antiquities especially. Good luck Goldfinger on an answer.

My Japanese is erased from my memory bank by age, LOL. Someone posted some info on the other thread I posted in 2003 about contacting the consulate in the area your friend is going to. If your friend does take his machine to Japan tell him to pack it real well and insure it good. Also have the instruction book with him to show officials what it is. Now days everyone is suspicious of things they haven't seen before. Last plane trip, the crew wanted to kick me off because I had a police/aircraft scanner with me to listen to. Good luck!

The Sea Disaster Relief Law stipulates that you have to wait in 6 months, even if it is the big catch like the guy above.

It is not the metal detecting, but I was surpirsed to know you can still pan gold in lots of Japanese rivers because of earthquakes or volcanic activities, though the amount of gold you might get is so small that you can make more money to work part-time at a convenience store for an hour.
And if you're an early bird, there are some jade beaches where you can pick it up.

I went to the one in Toyama, though I could not pick up any jade.
I heard the region, Hokuriku, is the popular destination where Asian frequent travellers go around.
