Meaning of ほう

Hello,

If it is possible, please, kindly, help me to find out meaning of ほう in the sentence below:

わたしは帽子をかぶっていたし暑さには強いほうなので断ったが、もしかするとくま自身が一服したかっ たのかもしれない。

Maybe it is possible to interpret it as follows:

I was wearing a hat and furthermore, since I resistant to heat, I declined, perhaps the bear by himself wanted to take a short rest.

Unfortunately, it is not completely clear to me why ほう has been used. Dictionary says about "way" meaning, but I wonder if I omit it from original sentence like below:

・・・暑さには強いなので断ったが・・・

Would the original meaning stays the same :?

ほう here is like "on the ... side", so it's saying that the hat's on the strong side of hats that resist the heat (that is, keep one cool). If you remove it, first of all it would be 強いので (な is a version of だ here, and you don't say 強いだ), and it would mean that it's strong against heat.

Perhaps "the bear wanted to have some tea" or something like would be better for 一服したかった, as it seems to mean "have a rest while having a smoke or drinking tea, etc."

As for translations, I prefer to be as close to original sentence as possible.
Even if it would sound so awkward. Every time that I had met correct and literary interpretation I found myself in trouble to follow translator's path. Somehow, I could not find a linkage between parts of original and translated sentences.
