Maybe I would give, more likely wrong, translation:
The land lord became very surprised at the first glance.
I am not sure about the reason why なる was used in conjunction with みる.
Would the meaning change much, if I restate the sentence without なる:
とのさまは ひとめ み たいそう おどろいて こう いうた。
Second difficulty with こう いうた. Frankly, I am not sure how to translate it.
