Meaning of 「ひびき」

Hello,

If possible could you please kindly help me with ひびき meaning in the sentence below:

きこたん ぱたとん きこたん ぱたとん
それから まいにち はたを おる おとが やまに ひびき たにに ひびいて きこえた と。

I could translate it as:

And after that, she weaves every day, and the sound of it could be heard in the mountain and valley.

But I am not sure about ひびき. I guess it is れんようけい form of ひびく.
Yet I wonder why this form was used. Would it be also correct to rewrite the sentence without it, like below

「。。。やまと たにに ひびいて きこえたと」。

Oh, and another little difficulty is ending と。 Maybe it again was used to quote ones thoughts (or to indicate ones feeling) like 「。。。ひびいて きこえたと（おもいます）」. But I am not sure.

I guess it is れんようけい form of ひびく

That's right. It's a connective for, similar to the -て form, meaning "echo(ed), and..." here.

In this case I think it's a contraction of という, meaning hearsay. That is, "they say the sounds of weaving on a weaving machine could be heard..." Sorry, my English vocabulary failed me there. Couldn't think of anything better than "weaving machine" for はた.

I'm not so sure about 「。。。やまと たにに ひびいて きこえたと」, though. Gonna have to wait for our NSoJ friends.

It's a literary expression. The meaning is almost the same, but the original has a more "spacious" nuance, just like not only "mountain and vally" but "everywhere". やまや たにに ひびいて きこえたと might be somewhat better.
