Maternity Care and Nutrition in Japan?

Hello Everyone:

I am new to this forum. Thank you for having me.

Here is my question:

I am 32 years old and my wife (she's 28) is 3 months pregnant. We live in the San Francisco Bay Area. I have notice that most, if not all, Japanese females and males have very nice white milky skin. I have heard that if my pregnant wife drinks a lot of milk during her pregnancy, then our baby would have nice white milky skin too. Is there a Japanese secret to have babies with beautiful skin?

Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

I heard that drinking milk during pregnancy makes for lots of growth and strong bones, but I'm not so sure about skin.

I haven't heard anything about the Japanese drinking a lot of it during pregnancy, although I've never known anything on that topic, so...

Interesting question and concern. . . hummmm. . .

I really think that if we were to go to genetics, we would find that much milk during pregnancy has no effect over the genes that will have already determined what the upperdermus (sp?) will be. The quality of the skin--the largest organ--will become as it will have been 'programed' to become, and there is very little--as far as I know at the moment--that can be done to affect that.

Once you have your skin make-up and consistency, however, there are some things that can be done to enhance that naturalness and pre-decided smoothness (whatever degree of smoothnes that may be).

Is your wife Japanese? Oriental? Do either of you or your parents have smooth, milky skin? The answers to these questions may help in getting some understanding of what the results may be. I hope it goes in your favor !! MM

It's an old wives tale.

I rather bet on genetic-makeup determines it.

cow's milk is for baby cows, intended to double their weight in a matter of monthes. Giving it to a pregnant women is... not a good idea. Also, the fats in milk prevent most of that calcium in milk from being absorbed by your body; I'd stick with leafy green vegetables.

I have been told that the sun seems stronger in the states than it is in Japan and that is the reason for the covering up. This from a few Japanese people studying state side. I can understand that for Arizona but Hawaii always had beautiful weather when i was there.

Well, in Hawaii it's absolutely brutal. One hour at noon w/ no sunblock and you are cooked. I've never gotten sunburned in Japan, and I've gone out for a couple of hours in the afternoon, at the pool. Well, I've gotten sunburned when I've gone boarding, but that's all day, and even then it's not that bad of a burn.

I can understand that for Arizona but Hawaii always had beautiful weather when i was there.

Doesn't matter about the weather. Dry, humid, whatever. Hawaii is indeed very nice, w/ the breeze from the ocean. However, look at where it resides longitudaly (is that a word?) on the globe. Very close to the equator. And I will take an uneducated guess that when you're out in the ocean, especially on a surfboard, you get even more sun due to the reflection off the water.

Hello Everyone:

Thank you very much for your inputs and suggestions. My wife and I are Chinese. Her skin is fairly pale and white, whereas I am on the yellow spectrum.

I understand that genetics have a lot to do with it, but I was hoping for a "secret" shared from Japanese mothers. Oh wells....thanks anyhow everyone.
