I see the Mainichi Daily News, finally went politically correct and took out the WaiWai section.

I will miss it. Just for the craziness, and pictures of the covers of the weekly magazines.

Correct me if I am wrong, but what I don't understand is that no_taboloid_against_gaijin activists, even who have ability to translate some into other languages, had not said anything about the Mainichi's crappiness or the Aussie editor for such a long time, more than 10 years(?).

It may not necessarily be discriminatory statements and images about residents of Japan, but I have to conclude my easy-going principle that many activists have a double standard mindset.

I am trying to understand "pipokun (ﾟДﾟ)uma" comments. I am not sure I am getting it. Wai Wai was crazy and funny, and sometimes morbid (which is what I did not like).

Insane hypocrisy on the part of the Japanese.
They have no problem in printing the content in Japanese, but as soon as it's presented in a language that people outside of Japan can understand, they throw a hissy-fit.

Sometimes people in this country act like giant babies with way too much time on their mind.

Image over substance is obviously the rule.
God forbid people on the outside actually see the substance.

There is no tabloid section in the Japanese version of MDN.
Porn and gossip should stay in magazines for such topics, not on a supposedly 'credible' newspaper. You should know the difference.

But as far as I can tell, the main reason for this problem is that the stories were printed at all, not that they were printed in a newspaper as a reliable story.

And if I recall correctly, the stories were always accompanied by the name of the publication they were pulled from (Asahi Weekly, etc.).

So they actually got rid of the WaiWai section then? Has the Mainichi Daily said anything on the matter, like giving their exact reasoning for getting rid of the section etc?

Reading WaiWai was mostly reading tabloid trash. But it was fun, and a "guillty pleasure". Every modern society has "tabloids". We have plenty in the United States.

I also did not like the morbid part. Thats the only issue that did turn me off.

The original point of Waiwai was to give non-Japanese–speaking readers of the MDN a chance to find out what was in the "non" news in Japan that week. Things that people -- real people in Japan in stores, in beauty parlors, and at bars -- were *talking about*. It was clear from the front it was all tabloid stuff.

And, for the record, I was there, from day one, when Waiwai was first being proposed at the MDN. I was one of the editors of Waiwai, with Adam and Margaret.

The magazine above was also a tabloid after all, but I don't know why the why why why activists said nothing about waiwai for such a long time.
I read somewhere an activist saying "Japanese should know gaijin also read tabloids in Japanese".

I love tabloids as well as double standards by any kinds of activists. So please wait for more accuracy in the google translation engine.
