Living in 1K apartment with a child

Hi,

I am moving to Tokyo with my wife and infant , and I want to rent an apartment for a few months, Could I rent a 1k or 1dk apartment ? or it is illegal to do so ?

If it's a short time, you won't want an apartment, which often has a two-month fee simply to start living there. Instead, look at monthly places, like Leo Palace, which are somewhere between hotels and apartments, and can be paid by the month.

Lots of families live in small apartments with children. If there is a law, no one is paying any attention.

Why not find something outside Tokyo and commute if you have to? I cannot say you would save money, but its a possibility. Someplace like Kashiwa or Matsudo in Chiba, or Jousou, Moriya or Toride in Ibaraki . Not that far from Tokyo and much better living for a family.

Is it necessary to tell the landlord how many persons will live in the apartment before moving ? or I can just rent the short-term place and move in with my wife and child ?

There is no law against a foreigner renting an apartment short-term. Realistically, however, not many landlords will be keen on the idea of renting for a short-term, and even fewer landlords will be keen on renting to someone without a job or income in Japan, and without any local reference checks. Much easier and probably more convenient for you to rent a monthly mansion or holiday apartment.

If you rent an apartment, the landlord will want to know how many people are staying in the apartment. Usually it becomes part of the rental contract.
