Living and Traveling in Japan

Hello all,

I am looking for advice on the top spots to visit in Japan.


I have been living in Kawasaki-shi for the past couple months, but now I am looking to travel outside of this area. I have done Asakusa, Ginza, Shibuya, Shinju, Meijo Shingo, Ueno, imperial palace, ryogoku, kamakura, enoshima and i should be going to a few museums this next week....


what i am mostly curious about is other places in japan.

I want to do the normal tourist places, but i would like out of the way ones as well.

I am planning to go to: Nikko, Mt Fuji/Hakone, Osaka, Kyoto , Sapporo and a few other places, but I would like to hear the MUST see spots for anyone that visits Japan.

Check out this thread for more info on places to visit. Hide Takayama is a great place to visit any time of year.

There are a whole bunch of wild monkeys who I'm sure would be delighted to have you stay with them on Yakushima.

If you want to see something off the beaten path and away from the Japan of those places you mentioned. Take a look.

Last week I went with some of my Japanese colleagues to northern Ibaraki for 2 purposes:

1. learn to make soba by hand (about 2 hours, was a nice experience)
2. visit Fukuroda Falls (not nearly as impressive as Niagara (what is), but it's a nice area)

I brought my road bike on my business trip and have been getting away into the country on the weekends. In my opinion, the best way to see the out-of-the-way places in Japan is on bicycle.

Kawagoe is a nice place to visit if you have a free day from Tokyo. There are several interesting attractions, including the famous Kita-In shrine. I would not put it on the top of the list for visitors who only have a couple of days in Japan (Kamakura, Nikko or Hakone are then better choices), but if you have more time, it is worth the trip (only 30 minutes, 450 yens from Ikebukuro)...

Nara is my favorite travel destination in Japan. Loads of stuff to see there. Also I recommend spending a day or two at a temple on Koya san in Wakayama prefecture, thats a really beautiful place.
