I have Anthy installed on Ubuntu, but that's not enough for me. I'd like something like Microsoft Japanese IME in Windows.

Anyone knows about such input method on Linux?

Has anyone used Vine? How it's different from Ubuntu in the matters of Japanese language and its input?

Anybody can share their experiences with inputting Japanese on Linux?

If you are using 10.04 or newer you can use iBus, otherwise i would recommend SCIM.

I use Ibus Anthy already, but that's not enough for me. I need something more like ATOK or Japanese IME of Microsoft's.

There are also things like Kanna, etc. which I haven't used (like on other distros). There are also Berry and Vine Linux, I tried Berry but can't figure out how to input Japanese with it. Vine, haven't tried it yet as I can't instal it for the time being.

I use iBus, which works fine for me. I have never used the Microsoft Japanese IME so I am not sure what you mean by iBus and anthy are not enough. Are they not working at all? or is there some feature that they don't have, that you need?

It's not enough. I need a kanji pad (recognising handwritten kanji) and emoticons, that's for sure.

I don't believe there is an input method that is that in depth on linux.
However for a kanji pad I use Handwritten kanji search at sljfaq.org , hopefully that will help out some.

Using online apps in addition - that's counter-productive. :/

Ah, I just found something

Tegaki - Open-Source Chinese and Japanese Handwriting Recognition

It appears to have decent kanji/hirigana recognition, and the website claims it can interface with iBus or SCIM.

This url will take you to the in-browser version, but the link in the upper right will take you to the downloadable version. I do not know if they support Linux, and I don't know if it what you are looking for. I do not use all of the options it has because I haven't gotten very in-depth into language learning as of yet, but I know that it is nearly identical to Windows IME. I got it because it works the way Windows IME was described to me to work (but would not). It does kanji, hiragana, katakana, and some other options I mentioned before that I have never used.
