Limits in threads

I am curious to what fellow members think on this. Over on RDnet when a thread reaches a thousand posts it is locked and restarted as part II and so on. So for example you would have Miyavi stopping at around the 1000 posts and a new one started as Miyavi II. I think, at least from a moderator view, it helps check the threads as it is easier to go though 1000 posts per thread rather than 6000 posts and hundreds of pages.
 
How about we just close Miyavi I and never start a Miyavi II?

I'd suggest a lower limit though, maybe 500.

Or perhaps a character limit, which rather better achieves the whole ease of moderation business.

Maybe I can't know what you have in mind for this without having been in on the Miyavi thread. If it's easier for mods, by all means. Posters are going to read what they're going to read, though, whether it is broken into 2, 100 or 600 separate threads.

The repetition of it all will be what never ends. ;-)
 
Well, yeah. Statistically it would lead to there being a number of topics filled with nothing but spam, as opposed to only one.

this would only lead to the creation of multiple accounts under the same IP number. this would also make it harder to keep track of the spammers because most of the members probably would have multiple accounts.

I think it is a really bad idea.

On other forum I've been part of a thread of the same sort, people spoke, met, laughed and had a real sense of a micro-community. It had over 4000 pages when admins decided to close it for no real reason. It was a huge loss, we tried to start another thread but it never felt the same, people left the forum, others became almost inactive and most of the fun disappeared.

I don't think that thread is doing anyone anything. Let it be and let the people in there enjoy their own little corner on jref.

 
Well, look. How many of the people go back a good hundred pages? Let alone two. They don't even bother looking up the events two pages back.
 
I mean taking from my Kanji topic, I do go back to page 2 and 3...embarassing yeah, but I have no doubt in the future I will again. I sincerely doubt it's going to go over 100 pages or so but it's nice to have some nostalgia, to see that you were stupid(er) and how easy it was... I wouldn't MIND if my thread were broken at 100 posts or whatever but it'd be cooler to have the entire thing. If it's just going to stay there anyway why bother!
 
It serves more as an archive if it is broken up into logical segments. Additionally, by closing the previous topic, and opening a new one, the participants are forced to put effort into their discussion again, so it will not degrade into spam and stay that way. Even if it does degrade, there is a point where it will be closed down, and the necessity for fresh blood and fresh thoughts arises. Now, academic topics, I believe, are not threatened by this, but the discussions regarding Japanese music, and especially mascara-covered artists seemingly straight out of Twisted Sister are rarely conducted in the academic vein.
 
I lack to see how the fact that you aren't likely to check the first pages ever again invalidates the attachment people have regarding those very threads.

I am also at loss on why do you consider "Japanese music, and especially mascara-covered artists seemingly straight out of Twisted Sister" different from other topics, and defend applying different rules on them. One's personal taste or views shouldn't limit other people.

To finalize it, spam is necessary in any community, it allows people to have fun and get to know others who share the same interests. Picking the Miyavi's example again, I'm really unable to find any benefit, to whom so ever in this community, in splitting that topic in several and randomly lock the topics at an arbitrary amount of posts from time to time.
 

Please, do take a look at said part of the forums, and tell me afterwards, is quality outweighed by quantity or not? I see no trouble in saying that said segment of the forums resembles chat more closely than a forum. And yes, it would be beneficial to occasionally clean things up, and attempt to dictate a more literate discussion. If it is at the cost of the number of participants, so be it.

And yes, I agree that spam to a certain extent is tolerable, however, I do consider that it is not to be defended, and impliedly encouraged by saying that it is part of a forum. If there is a method of reducing spam, it is foolish not to do so.
 

I have to agree with hideway on this one. Cutting/closing threads due to size isn't the best of idea. If the size is large and it is doing fine, I see no reason to shred it into smaller bits just because it seems like a good idea. If hundreds of little weeboos like their Miyavi thread or so, while I have no interest in it at all, let them keep it the way it is.
 
ahh i see, i misread the post. i thought that one member would only be allowed to post 1000 post per thread.

having a post limit per thread won't really change anything in my opinion.
