Likes and reputation

Dear valued members, you may by now have noticed the tiny "Like" link at the bottom of each post that gives you the opportunity to express your appreciation of a particular post. (While you cannot express your dissatisfaction in simple clicks, you can "unlike your like" in case you change your opinion).



The Like system is now connected to the reputation system, resulting in each "like" contributing to a member's total count of reputation points. We shall be testing this modification for a while, currently each "like" will add a total of 10 points to the rep count.

Thanks Hezam, it's not our mod, we're just testing it. Not sure though if it's porting over likes.

Update: this modification doesn't work yet as supposed to. We are now in contact with the developers and hope to implement this soon.

That's a great idea!

I've actually been wondering about the story of the reputation system on this site. Other forums I used to frequent had a much stronger reputation system (Or rather, it was just more developed because of the amount of active members and the people among them who used it)

Could I ask why you can't neg someone?

We used to have the ability to give negative reputation but sadly it led to blatant abuse and clashes among members, which is why we decided to disable it in 2006, if I remember correctly.

What do you mean by stronger reputation system?

Well, this forum I used to spend a lot of time on eventually had a really inflated reputation system. It'd get exploited a lot, but it was still really nice to see that people actually used it. It's not so apparent in this forum's case, which is a little surprising to me seeing how long it's been around!

On forums where the reputation system has had a lot of use, exploitation or not, it becomes a very useful tool to see who actually does have the best reputation around the place. I was a little confused at first on this forum -- Most people's reputation counts are just one or two bars, which doesn't give the best flexibility in representing their reputation on the forum, if that makes sense. Here, you can't really tell the difference between people with low and average rep since that difference usually isn't even one whole bar.

Yep, something similar (tho not reaching absolute zero) had happened in the past, with some sound, mature advice with sense of satire not received with sense of humor (probably hurting youthful pride). And friends giving each other rep points to balloon up rep levels.

Which is why I dislike the rep level stuff. (Strictly personal opinion!)

I am always thankful there are no dislike buttons here. Young men do tend to form attack gangs, and never more than when they are criticized for forming attack gangs like a pack of cowards!

Seems to me that a lot places will get overrun with military types on military topics and it seems they get their buddies to just sign up, click likes and dislikes, and disappear without comment.

Anyway, when logged on today I noticed I had two new likes. But I cannot track down what posts they are for. I get an error message when I try. I assume that is due to the trouble with the new system.

how come whenever i go to see likes received i get a screen telling me somethings up with the database?

Because there's an incompatibility between two programs. Unfortunately, certain developers are not very cooperative, abandoning their software. It looks as if we'll have to remove the link for the time being.

In the long run we will switch to another forum platform.
