Learning/studying Japanese crafts in situ?

Hello.
I was wondering if there is any organisation or scheme or list whereby people with an interest in learning (as a tourist, not under student visa) a traditional Japanese craft can make contact with craftsmen and craftswomen , being a kind of unofficial apprentice, not being paid or anything . I think it could be satisfying to observe and follow a master craftsman for several weeks or months in their place of work. I imagine such an arrangement could be quite rare if it exists at all.
