Would this plan involve the Senkaku Islands as well?

The LDP is examining whether to bring remote islands under state ownership, whose ownership remains unclear, according to the Nikkei. The issue is set to be taken up by a party working group dealing with policies on foreign residents and property acquisition in Japan—the discussion centres on expanding existing efforts to survey and nationalise islands located near Japan's maritime boundaries. Supporters say clearer ownership and administrative control are needed to manage Japan's territory properly.

The proposal is expected to be included in the LDP's platform ahead of the next House of Representatives election. In 2017, Japan nationalised 273 remote islands used to define its territorial waters and exclusive economic zone. More recently, there have been growing calls to nationalise additional islands beyond border areas, with security concerns cited as a key reason.
