Koreans view on Japanese in America

I can only speak on the knowledge and views I see in California.

I am a Japanese America, speak very little Japanese and during High School I had many Korean friends. However, in college there is a distinct anomiosity against Japanese whether they be from Japan or just have Japanese blood. I am not trying to convince anyone to change their beliefs only trying to confront the issue of rasicism between a fight that doesn't really affect Japanese or Korean Americans directly. Do parents teach Koreans children that Japan is this ultimate evil that should be hated and everything spawning from it is evil? I have never felt the pain of racisim until today when a Korean made a blunt statement concerning Japanese people are egotistical and HATE Koreans. I looked on the forums and noticed an issue on the K and C and wondered why it was such an important issue to be identified by a western civilization in a specific order?

If their claim were true, they must have had changed their country name back to Corea right after the end of WWII before anything.

Some do, some don't. Though during the cold war, there were more korean parents teaching their kids about the "devil north koreans" rather then teaching hate about the japanese.
 
Koreans are very proud - and thus they hate it when they are brought down or overshadowed. The 35 Japanese occupation only made this nationalism stronger - and the North Korean invasion made it very serious.

I used to go to tae-kwon-do, and I was actually picked on by South Korean KIDS because of my like of Japan - adn I wasn't even Japanes.
 

Waterboy, as a Korean Canadian I disagree with a lot of the attitude many of my Korean brothers and sisters share against Japan and the Japanese. Sure, what the Japanese did to the Koreans in the past was immoral. But you cannot judge each Japanese you come across on the street as a murderous and rapist savage that many Koreans have made them out to be. I have a very good Japanese friend and we get along fine (more so than many Koreans I've encountered). Like Hiroshi66 said, we Koreans are a proud people and we get offended easily by even the smallest slight of hand attacks (I'm not saying this is a good trait, I wish many of my Korean brothers and sisters were more patient and humble). Just keep this in mind, those Koreans who always spew out anti-Japanese propaganda are those who also can't see properly in the mirror. Anyways, those Koreans who are willing to throw crap in your direction only because you're Japanese are pretty much narrow-minded idiots who make the rest of Koreans look like backward people who constantly live in the past. However, there are many Koreans who have gone beyond that and just live judging people as individuals rather than lumping them in a group and condemning them as a result.
 
Let me post an honest opinion but its just simply my personal.

Yes,The Koreans have been under anti Japanese education environment from school,family and medias.

There is no official material or plan to teach anti Japanese notion to Koreans by the government but its usually done by words from mouth to mouth and speads to the society.

For example,the books which describes Japan badly sold very well in Korea.
The online anti Japan comunities still very popular.

However I would say its getting much better because I find less negative reactions against Japan recently over the net.(the communities where I usually go and check the informations about anti Japanism-there used to be lots of anti japanism promotion messages but recently its very small numbers and people have lost interts in those kind of topics.)-I would say now its better than Japanese biggest online discussion board-2 channel.net's anti Korean thread spreading parade.

by the way,you should know that there are many Koreans who love Japan very much though/.


I would say Not only Korean people's implicit anti japanism does matter

but in overall,Koreans are not veryfamiliar with mixing with foreigners in general.
Check out the nickname of Korea-"the kingdom of hermit" -It really makes sense.
I would call Korea differently as the "regional churl" .

By the way,this tendency would not be changed very easily since Koreans has not been experincing this kind of internationalized mood in her long history.

It has been just less ten years since foreigners can be found on the downtown street of seoul easily like today.

recently Japanese tourists are everywhere in Seoul and Koreans welcome them.
 
Meh. Some Koreans will forever hate Japanese because of something that happened during the Japanese rule of Korea and some Japanese will forever hate Koreans because of what they were taught by the military govt.
 
It seems that racism often stems from the belief that the other side hates you, so then you hate them. It can become a vicious cycle.

My uncle was Chinese and grew up in China (I say WAS because he has passed away). His family was run out of China by Japanese forces and he's always had a bad image of Japanese people as a result. He unintentionally passed that attitude on to my aunt (his wife/my mother's sister) and his three daughters who are now fully grown. And his family has never spent much time in China or Japan. So, it just goes to show that these attitudes can be passed on to he next generation. They don't hate Japanese people but I can tell that they have some negative images of them just from what they've said and the way they say it.
 
Yes. And in turn - Japan feels it needs to go defensive against these - especially because of its inferiority complex to SK (of which ironically, SK feels inferior to in many ways - if they didn't have an inferiority complex - they would let the Yasukuni shrine stuff go without no comment).
 
I don't think Japan has an inferiority complex to any other Asian countries. On the contrary, they seem to think they're superior. They do seem to have a bit of a complex when it comes to comparing themselves to Western countries. It seems like they're often trying to "join the club" with Western countries, sometimes successfuly, sometimes not.
 

Yes, I agree. However, I find this phenomenon quite interesting. I wonder why they want to appear less "Asiatic" in the eyes of the world?

and,not just the Koreans,but also the Chinese,
in fact,some Chinese call you guys 'Japanese ghosts' or 'Japanese devils',
and some Japanese call us 'Chinese pigs'

some idiots would insult you just because you are Japanese

I have also suffered racism from the Koreans,verbally and physically,just because I am Chinese.

Actually I think Koreans can be and now be more racists and discriminators against the people who from "the economically lower countries or very much culturaly different or exotic countries" and I found that tendency exist in every nation.

Watching from the TV-many programes reported about the Koreans' cheap reaction against the foreigners.
Is it a human basic mentality to look down the people who seems lower or weaker? I think yes. Looking at the kids who enjoy bulling the weak mate at the classroom ,I think the humans have been evolving themselves from the competition to get the beter things.

Education is very important to prevent such cheap acts.
 
I expressed myself wrong, sorry. What I meant was that the other countries seem to have an inferiority complex TO Japan, they want to be seen as equals. So they don't like it when prime ministers go to Yasukuni shrine, etc.

I think it's depend, But absolutely not because of japanese prime minister go to Yasukuni shrine. They just feel angry about it. Some Chinese have the inferiority complex because China was very weak during 18-19th. However, some of Chinese still mentally lived in the past when china was the super power in Asia. At that time China look down to all contries around asia calling them rough barbarism etc. They feel angry that China was invaded by a so called rough country so they shouting and menaceing everyday about kicking japanese out of their line of sight. I don't know much about Korean though.
 
Yes, kiuywiw, that's very true. But the reason i brought about Yasukuni was because it reminds them of when they were inferior - Yasukuni honours Japanese war criminals and people who died for their country.
 
but there are still japanese and korean couple so its jsut what they think and people shouldnt listen or else theyll end up doing the same thing
 
most people in korean and china has a great nation belief and esteem. They are not very likely to be a friend with a people from a so called enemy country.lol. But i think as time goes by it would be change. all asian country should not hate each other.
 
There are Japanese, Koreans, and Chinese who want to follow the Taiwanese example and just put everything aside and be friends.
 
When I was just a little kid, I used to hear lots of negative stuff towards Japan. I learned from an early age about the Japanese colonization of Korea and how bad they treated my gramps so I do admit I had a little bit of hatred toward Japan but then as I grew older, I became interested in almost anything Japanese like manga, language, anime, music, etc. I say, the past is the past and let's just forget everything. I believe that Korean and Japanese relationship is very important and I hope it we become very very close when the older generation dies out.

I've made a few Japanese friends and we're both really cool with each other. Like... my Japanese friend is really into Korea (She was riding the Korean wave before it hit Japan!) and so she started teaching herself Korean and I helped her out a bit. Vice versa. I'm currently teaching myself Japanese along with her help
 
It seems like no matter where you live in this world, the government is trying to pin you against another group of people. Man, the past is the past, no one is innoncent, and everyone has their "Dark past". To blame various events on the current generation of people is preposterous . I can't see people blaming these events which happened in the past is on other ethnicites, because not everybody now possesses the same point-of-view as their ancestors. I guess that I don't understand the beef between different nationalities of Asia. Maybe this is just me.....
 
Well, I mean yesterday I was at the bookstore, and I saw a family - a Chinese grandma, her daughter, who was the mother of a probably eight or nine year old boy. The mom went to go look around for a book and she left the grandma with the grandson. He was reading a Japanese manga. I overheard her ask him if the book was Japanese. He replied saying that there are no other mangas which are not Japanese. She was getting angry with him because it was a Japanese manga. Just something that I thought was what we were talking about here.

True - but this grandma looked like she hads been alive during the Japanese occupation of China so I can't go against her too much.
 
My first Japanese neighbor showed particular animosity when my family moved to Riverside California in 1967. That was my first Japanese encounter. My parents were too young during the Japansese occupation to develop any hatred, and hardly talked about Japan at all.

When I got to this forum, the first Japanese person to comment on my post was definitely unfriendly as can be; and I'm discovering that there are quite a few Japanese members with a bad meanass attitude towards Korea and I can't say I'm happy about it.

If a Japanese behaves with an attitude, I will treat him/her likewise. It's all mutual; so whoever gets it from me should never blame racism; there's only him/herself to blame. I don't look for fights; but anyone who flames, whether Japanese or not, can rest assured of the meanest treatment they can imagine.

That being said, I've met a number of decent individuals from Japan, of Japanese descent, or on this forum. Like I said, they got respect from me not by their ethnic designation, but by their person, their ideas, and behavior. The stereotyping of this thread can be considered racist by the way.
