The site of the deadlock is 160 miles (28.8 km) off Ganjeol Point, Ulju County -- 18 miles inside Korea's EEZ but not inside its territorial waters, so the entrance of the Japanese patrol boats was not illegal.

It looks like Japan's coast guard wishes to give a hand in policing Korean waters...but it's not exactly 1944, is it ?
With the tiny 77-tonner in the middle, it almost looks as if a small colony of boats is growing in the middle of the Korea-Tsushima Strait. Why not ask for some eels from the fishermen, slash 'em into edible bites of sushi, twist open some bottles of soju or sake, and throw a party of friendship ? It doesn't look like the tug of war is heading anywhere, and it might damage the engines, too. Chill out, people !

For the west this seem silly. Can't these countries figure this out.

It just seems a big flaw in the Asian character.

Yeah, why not Japanese newspapers? For lack of sense of humor on the Japanese side? Take it easy, so many countries on this globe, and there could be a Chinese trawler drifting into Korean or Vietnam waters the next monent--- but not necessarily having to stage anything that farcical.

The Korean fishermen admitted to violating the border although they claim not to have engaged in the actual fishing of eels, so says the news. As for allegations of brutality by the Japanese coast guards or that of kidnapping of the Japanese coast guards would be handled in a Korean court. As you say, as long as the Fishing Agreement is in effect, it is important that international law be observed by all parties concerned with consistency.

The news didn't give us the full story initially, and there are still some missing details.
But now that the fisherman admitted to the violation, and since the two governments have agreed to resolve the case in court, I guess we can calm down now. Whatever the court decides, the fishermen will have to pay.
