The removal of the upper ornament from the five-storey pagoda at Kōfuku-ji (興福寺) in Nara was shown to the media on 15 April, as the temple enters its first major restoration in about 120 years.

Work on dismantling the metal spire, known as the sorin, began in late March. It is being taken apart piece by piece. The process is expected to take time, and officials say it is part of a broader conservation effort. Temple authorities said each component will be checked once removed and repaired if needed. The restored spire is due to be reinstalled in 2031.
