Tech Kobe-based firm develops bear-proof apparel

Syco Inc. has been promoting its protective clothing, made from aramid fibres and carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic, as capable of stopping a knife. What the company is now being asked is whether that same gear could withstand a charging bear. Its president, Sasada Naoki, 47, has found himself in unfamiliar territory after the recent rise in fatal bear encounters around the country. People have been contacting the firm with the same question: whether the anti-stab garment might work against a bear attack. Over the past month alone, he has received at least ten enquiries of this kind. Sasada admitted he had never imagined the company would face such a flood of customer questions about whether the clothing could withstand that level of force.

Syco's anti-stab clothing is deemed capable of stopping a knife attack from an adult male. But bears are more powerful than adult males. However, Sasada said no one knows for sure whether its existing products can withstand bear attacks. He needs to collect data and consider standards for the specific use. And because stab-resistant garments are designed to protect the wearer's chest and torso, it is also necessary to shield the head. According to a survey conducted by Akita University's Advanced Emergency and Critical Care Centre, 90% of bear attack victims suffered facial injuries.
