Kimchi Said To Cure Bird Flu (SARS) In Korea!

I love kimchi, chile and garlic is the bestest

Interesting info, PachiPro. I also heard/read in the news that red skinned garlic (not the white skinned) was tthe primary factor that no Korean died of SARS; don't know if there's any scientific basis to it though.

btw I love garlic. Do you ? Hmm, juicy, juicy ! :liplick:  :wavey: :japanese:

i dont get it ... flu and stuff allways comes with a feaver (which is the bodys own heating system to kill stuff in the blood) so why should the heat do it? maybe theres a chemical in the peper (or the kimchi :D)

Researchers at Seoul National University said chickens infected with the deadly bird flu virus began recovering a week after they were fed with fermented bacilli extracted from kimchi.

see it says the bacteria is doing it. hm

sounds interesting and it should be to expensive to produce

hope it works out!

Ahh the revivals of old threads.
Koreans believe kimchi to be the cure for everything.... except bad breath.
I cant say whether im more healthy or not being surrounded by it every day, and I do eat more than my fair share of it daily too... I love it, but I still get sick. Dont think I have cancer yet, but supposedly kimchi can preven that too....
I dont think I would be willing to put all my faith into it considering that there are thousands of different types of kimchi.

There might be something to it. When garlic is chopped it produces a compound called allicin, which is an antibiotic. Cooking destroys the allicin, so the trick is to eat the chopped garlic raw.

There are many foods out there that can help boost the imune system due to their ingredients, a healthy diet will help prevent you from getting ill.
If somone said to me "Oh did you know, oranges are said to help cure colds", i would probably think they were talking a load of rubbish at first, but we all know that the vitamin C and natural sugar content in oranges can help boost our imune system and desease fighting capabilitys by helping us produce more white blood cells and stuff.
Initially i felt quite sceptical about kimchi helping cure bird flu, but then again you have to remember that bird flu is just another virus like to common cold, so i think its quite plausable that it could have the ability to help cure bird flu in certain cases like oranges can help cure a cold- who knows, maybe people will start to drop their macdonalds and KFC take aways and start eating healthier due to all this bird flu hype :? ? I guess at least bird flu won't entirely effect the local economys in certain negative respects/ways all the time.

Isn't bird flu a completely separate epidemic/virus from SARS ?
You're right. SARS is caused by a corona-virus (& leads to something like pneumonia), while bird flu is caused by an influenza virus.

Since the Yahoo link is already gone. Here are a couple of more links in the BBC
Quote from the BBC:
"The researchers said the results were far from scientifically proven and if kimchi did have the effects they observed, it was unclear why."
Having a sample of 13 chickens & then saying "We found that the chickens recovered from bird flu, Newcastle disease and bronchitis. The birds' death rate fell, they were livelier and their stools became normal," doesn't make it a valid scientific result.

As bossel also pointed out, you are correct. There is no relation I don't know why I put them both in the same sentence. Must be the previous story I read about SARS.

True. But is interesting that the "link" is still being touted in the press and by some scientists.
