Kanji question on the meanings of one...

Hey,

I have a question about the meaning of one kanji. OK, say for example this Kanji 適 represents so many meanings such as: qualified, suitable, occasional, rare. So if someone wrote this in Kanji, which way would you look at it? This is where I am lost. If you wrote this one kanji, it means so many different things. Can someone clear this up for me? I would really appreciate it

If somebody writes just

適。

I suggest you whap him round the ear and say
なに言ってんか。ヴぉけ！

If somebody writes
年齢に適した運動をします。
then I suggest you lookup 適する in your dictionary.

My point is that 'one kanji' rarely has a meaning on its own and when one kanji /is/ a word in a sentence it will be that given in the main section of the dictionary and _not_ best looked up in the 'kanji meanings' field.

Assumin you meant 'with' not 'by' then you're probably not the only person but frankly it's got the essential bit 'text typed in goes on screen'. Everything else is just fluff.

Yes, I meant "with". Sorry for the confusion. The problem is that it's hard to find anything, it's a bulletin board, not a forum, and there's not much by way of searching. Yeah, it's the bare minimum... but hell.... phpbb is free!
