hello
i'm learning to the 3 kyuu test in december - and i have a question.
as far as i know you need to have 60% success in order to pass the test.
my question is - do you need 60% in each part or on the overall ?

I'm pretty sure it's the overall that they count for that.

i hope you are right....
in the jees site i could only find the same general statement that The passing score is usually 60% - but nothing about each part score. but i think it is strange (you can pass the test without understanding the listening part??)

The test is divided up like this:

Characters & vocabulary: 100 points
Listening: 100 points
Reading & grammar: 200 points
For a total of 400 points.

So you need 60% of that (240 points) to pass the test.

This should be the case, but do make sure you don't leave it completely blank (since different rules may then apply ).

I just recently found out what this whole JLPT thing is about, and it is pretty interesting.. Especially when I hear you guys saying that you only need 60% overall to pass!! when I finish my study in a few years I'm gonna give 1kyu a try I think. It's always good to have a certificate stating your proficiency.

please note that level 1 is a bit hard (i know several people who know japanese very well that did not succeed in it).
by the way - as far as i know in order to pass level one you need 70% and not 60% as the lower levels.
but then again - if you are studing hard and regularly you probbly can pass this test without any problem.

Yes, you can, but that means you would have to average 80% on the rest of the test.

There is no penalty for guessing wrong, and there's a 25% chance of getting a guess right so you really only have to be certain about 47% of the questions.
