Today, JAXA's second attempt at launching its new flagship H-3 rocket failed after the second-stage engine could not ignite. The H-3 lifted off from the Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima Prefecture at around 10:37 a.m. on 7 March. After about 15 minutes, however, JAXA sent a self-destruct signal to the rocket based on the assessment that it was unlikely to fly safely.





The mission was to launch an observation satellite. The rocket has been mooted as a possible competitor to SpaceX's Falcon 9. It is the second H3 failure for Japan's space agency, JAXA, after the rocket failed to leave the launchpad in a previous attempt in February.





The head of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, Yamakawa Hiroshi, apologized following the failed launch.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) successfully launched an advanced observation satellite, Daichi-4, into orbit using its new H3 rocket, marking a significant step in demonstrating its reliability. The launch, which took place at Tanegashima Space Center, was celebrated by JAXA officials. This success follows a previous failed attempt with Daichi-3. The H3 rocket performed flawlessly, deploying the satellite into space and its remains falling into the Indian Ocean. JAXA head Hiroshi Yamakawa emphasized that this achievement underscores Japan's progress in maintaining autonomous space access and international competitiveness.


JAXA plans to launch six H3 rockets annually, phasing out the older H-IIA rocket, its current mainstay, after its 50th launch later this fiscal year, which runs through March 2025. All eyes had been on the third launch — and whether it could demonstrate the rocket's sustained reliability amid plans to fully transition to the H3 next fiscal year. Yamakawa said he expects that successfully launching a H3 rocket for the second consecutive time will enhance its credibility both domestically and internationally, but said that JAXA will continue to carefully analyze the results of the latest launch. [...] JAXA had initially planned to launch the H3 rocket carrying the Daichi-4 on Sunday, but poor weather conditions caused that attempt to be delayed. The Daichi-4, built for high-resolution Earth observation, cost around ¥32 billion to develop. It boasts a 200-kilometer observation range, quadruple that of the Daichi-2. This extensive range allows it to monitor effectively even at nighttime and in poor weather. The satellite is capable of detecting ground deformation, landslides and the impacts of natural disasters such as heavy rainfall, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. In the aftermath of disasters, it can also rapidly evaluate the extent of damage.
