Apparently, we have many plant and tree lovers here at the forum, so I thought it would be interesting to start a thread where members could post (Japanese) flora they are not familiar with. I know that there is a lot of literature on the subject, even smartphone applications, but why not tap into the accumulated expertise available at JREF?

I have a large collection of (unclassified) plant photos taken on hikes and bicycle rides (and so does @johnnyG, I assume) and will start with this tree we came across last week in the Okutama area. I wouldn't even know where to start looking at Wikipedia.

According to GL (see below):

Magnolia obovata (ホオノキ Hōnoki)

Thanks, Davey! Google Lens is amazing. I will see if they can help with my other pics, too. And I'll post them nevertheless...

@Davey, could you run this one through Google Lens? Unfortunately, GL doesn't seem to be compatible with iOS. I find these beauties growing all along the rivers these days.
