WHY ARE THEY SO EXPENSIVE?

Seriously... 1800yen for one?

Thats over $20AUS.

Terrible.

Anyone know why this is exactly?

Not really sure. I know American theaters get all their profits from food prices, not the razor thin margins on the actual movies. I only went to one movie in Japan and I don't recall a lot of people at the concession stand.

We got lucky too...a matinee with student ID gets you in for about 1500.

i heard in some places in tokyo it can run you around 4000 yen....

Down in Fukuoka you can go for 1000yen if you have a international student card.

Japan, 1500 yen for students
Aus, 720 yen for students, 1125 for 'Gold Class'; private screenings (30 peeps), reclinable chairs, full bar with staff that wait on you... its wonderful

No idea why its so expensive... could be that theatres just take up so much spaces its expensive that way...

The Secret:

At least half of the theaters I've been to in Japan have special cheap showings, like matinees in the states.
The kicker?
It's the late show!
Yep, that's right. Unlike America, were the cheap shows are in the afternoon, it's usually the last showing of the night that's cheap in Japan. This applies less in the big cities, but you should still be able to find it. By cheap, I mean a ticket will run you 1200 yen instead of 1800. (About 6 bucks less.)

I guess it depends on where you are. In Tokyo? I'm not sure, but I know many theaters in Kansai the last show of the nights starts between 9 and 10 PM.

Okie Doke, Seems like it's about the same as here. Well I myself don't plan to see alot of movies, but I suppose if there is something out that I am dying to see I'll be going to the late show.. Heh.

that is ******* expensive. pardon my francois. here in the US i know the chain Century 16 charges US $9.00 most other places are around $8.50, but i agree about the food, that is where they get most of their money. large drinks are like $3.50, gg rip off. i usually skip food

movie prices are on the increase in australia too i think. they seem to go up by 50c every year.

There are also those special offer days, like first tuesday/wednesday of the month, when you can get in for 1000yen?
At least there are ladies days, when women have to pay only 1000 yen.

...and the prices are allmost the same in here too. A movie here is 10 euro, so its about 1400 yen I think.And no discounts...

They have some pretty late shows in Tokyo area, but the only problem is that by the time the movie ends, the subways are closed for the night.

In holland i went to a movie theater in a small town, Delft, and it was 8 eur for the Movie troy, whereas here in Brussels it would have been only 5.60 eur. Even worse, the room was so small, and the tiket told u were to sit, assigned seats, that got me furious, and dutch people are freakishly tall ; im never goin there again.

Last night I saw a movie (in London) for ﾂ｣5.50, about 1100円. In some cinemas, I could have paid nearly twice that. I don't think there's anywhere in London where one would pay 4000円、 though.

and the candy bar prices keep going up as well!!! my gosh I only buy a choc top when I go to the cinemas. It use to cost $2.50 AUD and then the next time I came back the were charging $3.30AUD rip off merchants!!!

Her are the German prices for comparison (Cinestar, a wide-spread cinema chain here, modern and comfortable):

Adults: Mon+Wed 5竄ｬ, Tue+Thu 4.30竄ｬ, Fri-Sun 7竄ｬ (Sun before 1pm 4,80竄ｬ)
Kids under 12: Mon+Wed 4.80竄ｬ, Tue+Thu 3竄ｬ, Fri-Sun 4.80竄ｬ
better places (further up): 0.70竄ｬ supplement
The expensive stuff is food&drink there, e.g. a simple Coke/Sprite/whatever 0.3l is 2.50竄ｬ
