The Asahi Shinbun on mixed-gender bathing in the Tohoku region: a government project is underway to keep afloat the Japanese tradition of mixed-gender bathing, which is becoming less common due to an increase in male bathers who show up only to ogle women.

Why am I not surprised?

I used to have a lot of body hair compared to Japanese men. Often I would hear comments about looking like a hairy monkey at the bathes , LOL. Being a gaijin , they just assumed I didn't speak Japanese or they didn't care. Sometimes as I left , I would jump around like a monkey so they knew I had understood.

The only women that bath in those 混浴温泉 are grandmas and great-grandmas. At least that was my sad experience.
