Japan SIM card

I will be traveling in Japan for two months (cycling and couchsurfing the length of Japan). I have an unlocked iPhone 4S (micro-SIM). I want to get a Japanese SIM card with a Japanese number.

I'm mostly interested in sending and receiving Text Messages; though I would be making a few calls within Japan, and also to the US from time to time. I'm not interested in internet access on the phone.

Does anyone know the best source for a SIM card that will work country-wide, especially in the more rural locations?

I don't speak Japanese, so I need a card that I can easily set up and recharge if necessary.

A few options listed here, I believe it's Softbank that offers a prepaid SIM card (for a hefty price)
