That's a very pertinent point Mamoru-kun. There are plenty of shameful incidents on all sides - the Germans, the British, the Americans, the Japanese.

It's human nature in the end, although the way Germans have confronted their demons is much more impressive than the others have.

I see that you are slowly beginning to understand what an internet forum is about: free discussion. You are not compelled to respond to points other people make. You can decide for yourself.

For my part, I can't see why I should answer questions that for the largest part are not directed at me.

Well, I disagree, on both accounts. I would say it's more a case of naiveness or a disregard for the feelings of their closest geographic neighbors in Asia. In a similiar vein, I can't say that Bush will rank as a 'bright' man when it comes to reviewing his foreign policy actions (or lack of).

This is what I don't understand. Why do young Chinese demand apology from Japan? Most of their grandparents probably didn't even fight in the war to begin with. Death toll during China civil war was much much higher than death caused by war with Japan. Yet, there exist little or almost no criticism of any sort on any of the Chinese war-lords during that time. Does that mean it's okay for Chinese to kill each other and not okay for Japanese and Chinese to kill each other?? I don't see the logic in that.

Chinese has always been proud of its history and called themselves the "Great Nation" (ﾅｸ窶毒ｸ窶凪?佚･ﾅ｡ﾂ?) and calling Japan "Small Japan" (ﾂ渉ｬ窶愿ｺ窶怒).
Now, why would a "Great Nation" want to constantly reminding everyone that it has been the "victim" and we're suppose to feel sorry for the "Great Nation" China claimed itself to be? What other "Great Nations" in the word that you see go around and crying and complaining that some "small nation" has done them wrong? I don't see American going around and portray itself as a victim of British brutality during the colonization period.

Americans in general think they can always do anything, including kicking people out that we don't want (though we kept a law system loosely based on England's, and our government is similar but different). I've always told students that this is the single most strength and weakness in the US, 'recognizing you can change something, but not making the mistake of changing it just because you can' (not all change is for the better).

The Chinese move is primarily a political ploy, but Japan would be better off to pay attention to diplomacy to get what they want in the UN and calm the 'restive' neighbors.
