All these wild j-teenage girls, being prostitutes, and
paid dates for older men.

Where' the father in all this. Here, in America, many many fathers would do extreme things to stop this.

I mean extreme !

is this just another over-rated expose, very small, and blown out of porpotion

Good question, Jack-in -Box. Without any serious research (I think it does deserve some) how about there possibilities ? These are some purely logical possibilities that I can imagine, but definitely not based on any facts.

1. The girl knows, and perhaps her mother knows, but they never let it be known to the father.

2. The father knows it too, but is too ashamed to pursue the matter openly. He pretends not to know, and leads a superficially calm, composed life.

3. The father knows, and pursues the perpetrator in private, and agrees to a settlement. The monetary compensation forwarded to further his daughter's education.

4. The father knows it, but he also knows that the perpetrator can often threaten to expose the matter, thereby destroying his and his daughter's reputation. Thinking it is better to be forgotten, leaves the matter untouched.

5. The father, enraged, employs the mob for a payback Godfather style.

6. The father, unable to handle the emotional load, goes for psychological treatment, but rarely has the strength to take action, legal or other.

7. The father knows, but shrinks from pursuing it because he, too, is engaging in prostitution, so out of guilt lets the matter rest.

8. It is such an isolated incident, that few fathers know how to deal with it. They just suffer and cannot do anything.

Or maybe the father doesn't know because he stays at work almost 24/7?

I sometimes feel if they knew, they still wouldn't really do anything, though. I just pick up on a nonchalant attitude when it comes to the roles of fathers over there. It's such a matriarchal society. It seems the father leaves the disciplinary actions to the mother. I've had Japanese men actually tell me that they wished they had bigger roles in their children's lives.

I don't know, though...

In America (their are exceptions), fathers would be a big influence to prevent this. It would be a big crisis in the family, if the mother or father new.

I heard they get quite alot of money out of it. Certainly beats working in a supermarket.

I guess the father does not know. If the mother or someone found out they would just ignore it and leave it be as to not enrage the father.

Just gotta hope the father is not one of the rich buisnessmen that needs pleasing.

I really don't understand how the fathers could let this go on. I mean if I had a daughter, and she was have sex with men my age for cash, I'd surely do something about it. Then again, I might think differently if I was of the japanese culture.
Question: Is this common in Japan?

I guess a question has to be asked. "Would you want your daughter to do this?"

The reason why I brought this up is because most caring fathers wouldn't want their daughters doing such things. Now in Japan, as Tim pointed out, the father simply doesn't know. But nothing is being done about this, it's obvious. I said this before and I'll say it again. The society has to acknowledge that this is happening. That's the only way for change.

the dad probably doesnt know, doesnt care, or is too busy to really notice the signs.

sometimes i worry about japanese society, i really worry....

man, if my daughter was doing that **** she'd get sent to a private catholic school until she graduates >:}

daddy doesn't know. He is working all the time. Most fathers it seems barely know their daughters birthday, hobbies, interests or dreams let alone whether they are sleeping with men their daddies age for money.

As long as little Tomoko has a high passing grade its not Daddies concern. Daddy has work to do.

Perhaps we shouldn't just hold the father for questioning. As Nurizeko means it, it's a societal problem, though there should be suspection of negligence of the father (parents) in specific cases

Actually the father and mother would care if they only knew about it. More often than not, the young girl will leave the house or school looking like any ordinary girl. She'll often have a small bag with her. At her friends house or in the bathroom of a restaurant or train station, she will slip into her sexy clothes like boots and a miniskirt and apply heavy make-up and go about her business for a couple of hours. She will then change back into her normal everyday clothes, remove her make-up and go home. And the family is none the wiser.

It happens with a countless number of young girls every day. Some girls even leave their prostitution clothes in a locker at the train station. I know this because I saw a documentary on TV about it during my recent visit to Japan where the TV crew followed a few of these girls around for a few days.

Even though the parents don't know, has this been brought to the attention of the media? I know there are some people who have to know about this. There has to be some kind of acknowladgement. :?

As I mentioned above, I saw it on a documentary on Japanese TV so they (the parents and media) must know about it. Either the parents don't know, or they refuse to see the signs. The government and general media well know about this as it is reported on almost weekly. Maybe, in my opinion, it is the males in the government who are taking advantage of these young girls by purchasing their services, that they dont pass legislation against it. I don't know.

Hmmmm, so even though people know about this. Is it really even an issue? :? I don't know, I'm beginning to think that this could be acceptable. :?

As far as I have been able to gather, it has become acceptable and is considered a "norm" in Japan. Maybe some others living there can add more input.

Sigh...what's the point in even having a family in the first place? Kinda stupid.

Its sad to know this is going on.

When i set sail for japan i shall be keeping a very close eye on my daughter :-)

you dont have a daughter,
as far as i know?

my daughter is greatest in the world.

hugs to pepe.

First of all, this isnt about the father, or fathers differing in cultures. And secondly, it is very naive to say that the fathers would do something in America, and assuming they step down to the issue in Japan. There are many social issues that have to be considered before discussing such a topic. The social surrounding around each girl are different, and this influences some going into prostitution. Some fathers do not even spend the time to watch their children grow up, or have the time to raise their children. It is not about the father stopping his daughter, because the daughter would not be a victim of prostitution in the first place if the social implications of her family did not force her. And in America it is the same. Those girls who become prostitutes feel they have no other way in life, so their choices are limited. Some are even raped by their fathers and brothers, and when they run away they find themselves helpless and uneducated in the world, what else can they think of but to sell their bodies since everyone has already taken advantage of them?! And don't tell me that a girl who is fortunate will simply consider prostitution, because she would have been raised to understand her position in the world. But the one who was less fortunate, her father wouldn't have been able to give her the same care as that of the more fortunate girl. You shouldn't ask where the father is, you should question why he left this path for his daughter to take.

Not quite, I know there are some issues that need to be considered. But we talking about this in general terms. You said the reasons why they become prostitutes is because their choices are limited. Well, here in America, there has been a trend in suburban homes where girls are prostitutes. Which is the last place to discover teens in prostitution, but it has happened. One of the reasons why I believe there's teen prostitution going on in Japan in the first place is because of the status of women. There's been a report that Japan, one of the world's most developed nations still doesn't include women in lot's of political issues. I've also heard that although women are accepted in universities companies are least likely to hire them. Even though they are just as qualifed as their male counterparts, or more qaulified. It seems women are the last to get hired, or the first to get fired. I really don't the issues in Japan, I'll admit. So, I could be wrong.

Yeah I agree with you in terms of the status of women. It is true, even though its 2005, on some levels women are still not seen as equals. and the issue was stupid in the first place..why the fathers dont do anything about their daughters being prostitutes?...that is too broad a topic, and you cant narrow it down... social issues and the society are only some of the reasons....

Well dear, you seem to provide some insight. I would admit, Japan has made some progeress. I think back during WW2, women had to obey their fathers, then their husbands, and finally their sons. So, all their lives, they were taught to be submissive. Now, japanese women are allowed to earn an education, and a job. But not really good ones, it seems. I guess japanese society's attitudes haven't changed all that much. Kind of sad when you think about it. Take France for example, from I hear during elelctions, 30% of the candidates have to be women. This was something I heard.
