I for one am not interested in a prominant display of where a member comes from once they are in Japan.

Don't know if you are aware of this but, it isn't necessary to show the flag of the prefecture that a member is in, they have the choice of just having the Japanese flag only.

Take a look at mine.

After looking through all the flag options I now wonder why the 50 flags of the USA are not included as an option, you've got them for Germany, France, Spain and other European countries but not the US

Thank you for that enlightenment , I wouldn't be able to use it, even if it was an option, as I live in Japan.

Please don't, I am pretty sure your have heard the saying;

You can please some of the people some of the time but you can't please all of the people all of the time....or something like that.

I hope it isn't that big of a deal. It's a good discussion about one way members have to liven up the board, yet I hope it doesn't become such a bone of contention that people end up arguing needlessly or worst case stop participating here. Or people don't get pedantic about it.

A reason to check IP's.

Just now a new member signed up and listed his location as the UK. His IP shows he is located in South Korea. Chances are good he will start posting anti-Japanese trash as he does about every week or two. Now I can keep an eye on his posts and avoid having him cause a problem.

As for the IP match country thing...I sometimes use others IPs from different countries, so does that mean I would get in trouble here for hiding my privacy generally when coming online?

I hope you are enjoying the forum otherwise...yes, a great deal of it is in English rather than Japanese, but I'd think one can still learn a lot about Japanese in that fora. As far as I know, we are not allowed to leave that field blank. The software won't let you save your profile without picking something as your country of residence. Which brings me back to (optionally) letting the country name appear as text instead of a flag.

If I burn my passport can I get a blank for my flag?

...just asking, I don't plan on burning it.

While i do not believe in restricting the fundamental human right
to travel, I do recognize the political realities,
so I will keep mine.

But I heard of some guy who did, also renouncing his citizenship to
any country. I think they deported him to his "former" home country.

I received a warning, yesterday, by showing a flag that not correspond to the IP I use. Okay, I've already edited my profile. But the point is: I feel uncomfortable using a flag that not correspond to my nationality. And, this is not just a matter of "(un)confortability". My social and cultural background (let's call it "patriotism") makes me refuse to show a foreign flag .

Thanks for editting your profile. Unfortunately, we have no intention of changing our policy in regard to country flags. As Elizabeth and other users pointed out, there has already been enough discussion on that issue, and we will most definitely not open that Pandora box again. Protheus, I thank you profusely for your understanding and hope your patriotism won't suffer too much, particularly in the light of the fact that you are living in a foreign country.
