Hello everyone,

Not too long ago, I learned the predicative phrase "nakereba ikenai/naranai". My grammar book describes it as "must, need, have to". An example it gave me is, "もっと勉強しなければいけない", "I have to study more".

However, whenever I needed to say, "I needed to study more", I would say, "もっと勉強する必要があります". Seeing as they are of the same context, what would differentiate the two? Is there a certain situation where the latter is better than the former? Any help would be grateful!

Thanks,
Kai

"have to do" vs. "need to do", as in the translations.

Wow, silly me. :| Thank you for the insight, Toritoribe!
