To talk about things happening right now you will change the verb to the progressive tense and make it like the one below. Have you studied verb endings and tenses yet at all ? If not, maybe you should look at a text or something first since it's kinda confusing to explain....but let me know if you have questions after that !
Well I think if he is coming from a beginner perspective. shimasu would be correct. We normally don't learn te forms til 102. so...maybe for now it is correct but he will learn more forms later maybe.
So I just looked at this again.
To me 'souji wo shiteimasu' sounds more like 'doing the cleaning', compared to 'souji shiteimasu', just 'cleaning'. I only really mentioned because you listed 'souji wo shimasu' there as just one verb, which if you wanted you should use 'souji shimasu'.
I just looked at google and there were a few hundred hits using this form:
何かを掃除をしている。
Is this actually an acceptable sentence? 何かを掃除している would sound better probably?
