What are your views on Boxing? In Most of north America Boxing is on TV and gets more hype than Mixed Martial Arts. My views are that Boxing is a Fighting sprot but it is a incomplete fighting style. How can the World Boxing Champ say that he is the best fighter when he only uses his hands?

I am a Boxing Fan but I Like Mixed Martial Arts the best.
What are your views on this topic?

:box: VS :box:

A good boxer can be an awesome fighter on his feet, but if he is taken down to the ground he is totally helpless and will be submitted by a good ground fighter.

IMO in terms of determining the best hand-to-hand combat fighter, a style that incorporates boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, and submission fighting would be best.

But in terms of self-defense against an untrained attacker, e.g., a drunk in a bar, any style of martial art, e.g., Judo, Karate, Aikido, Tae Kwon Do, Praying Mantis Kung Fu, etc. or even boxing would be good.

The Old Champ....

Mike Tyson combined biting with boxing to good effect!!

Frank

:D :p 👍 😊

Boxing is a complete fighting style, its like saying taekwon do is a incomplete fighting style.

OK so you say boxing is a incomplete fighting style,
so could you tell me plz how you would complete this fighting style?

Again, in terms of determining the best hand-to-hand combat fighter, Tae Kwon Do IS incomplete.

TKD practitioners who have no training in ground fighting always lose in MMA competition because once they're taken down to the ground they're helpless.

I've seen 6'5", 255 lbs. K-1 kickboxer Jerome LeBanner of France lose to a Japanese wrestler Tadao Yasuda because LeBanner couldn't do anything on the ground. Yasuda took him down and choked him out.

You can't complete Boxing. Boxing is only one part of fighting.
That is like having a fighting style that is only Kicking and noting else.
Juist like boxing is only fists and nothing else.
Bruce Lee was on the right track in the sense their is no style. You use styles to learn. In real fighing you need to know how to do everything Punching, Kicking,
Grappling, Through/suplex. The best way to learn how to fight is to studdy many styles and to combine what you like of them to make your own fighting style. This is what Bruce Lee style Jeet Kun Do was. Lee's own style of all styles. He studdyed may fighting styles.

The human body can only move in so may ways so to be a complete fighter you have to be a master of all. But at the same time A guy that is a expert a head buting can beat any figher if he attacks at the right time. 🍜

Buy the way I am not a Martial Artist of any kind only a fan.

By the way Kung Fu is underrated as a Fighting art. In most MMA macthes you never see any Kung Fu styles. But Kung Fu is a very good stlye to learn. I am suprised that most Boxers and standing fighters Like K1 fighters do not studdy Kung Fu. I think that a Master of Kung Fu can go toe to toe with a Muay Tai Kickboking Master. That would be a great macth to see in K1 if they was using Muay Tai rules.

Boxing is a in ways incomplete yes, whenever you see a boxer go against a kickobxer in K1, the faster, more varied kickboxer will mostly come out on top. (I may be biased here, being a black belt kickboxer hehehe)

But you must respect all fighting styles for what they are. Here in the UK, boxing is very common and respected and a skillfull boxer can be deadly in a fight.

And Bruce Lee was right, after training in Kickboxing for long, only now can I see his point. A complete fighter has no style, except his own.

Topi do you think that a Kung Fu Master can go Toe to Toe with a Muay Tai Kickbox Mater. I think that I will be a very close macth. Well aging It depends on what style of Kung Fu some styles have some armbars, But to my knowledge Traditional Muay Tai has none. But Topi Have you every thought of studding Kung Fu with you Kickboxing back ground. It might help you out a lot with the Infighting.

The art of fighting without fighting is the single best technique imho. 8-)

I think boxing is an okay stlye of fighting, but it does lack in many areas: no kicking or takedowns just to name two.

Still, I wouldn't want to enter the ring with some of the boxers out there. The punching power that some boxers have is almost crazy! It can only take one punch to end a fight.

I hate watching a fighter vs submission grappler. You have one guy kicking and punching and the other bloke just throws himself in and trys to get a good hold.

In what arena are we talking about?

K-1? Pride fighting?
or.....

On the street. Funny thing is, on the street, when it should matter most, it doesn't matter much at all. That is, anyway you knock someone out counts. In a staged match, however, rules and refs have a way of making that reality irrelevant.

Personally, boxers I've known tend to be much tougher than many "hobby" martial artists. Heh, you should see the college boxing club at Kansai Gaidai University in Osaka.

Btw, did you know Tyson once had his punching strength tested at almost 300 pounds per square inch?

Yes I went to a few local Kung Fu places recently to see what was going on, but none of them seemed disaplined enough, it was too commercial.
I would like to study more weapon based martial arts, as I have only had small amounts of training with staffs.

If you want to do weapon training theres 2 ways about it. Sports/Exhibition training with swords/staffs etc (kendo, hapkido, etc) or theres some useful weapons to learn like a dokko/yawara stick. Non-lethal/legal weapon which can be changed for anything you can hold in your hand thats ~10cm long (pen, stick, rolled up paper, mobile phone if you are really in a spot of trouble).

Now something like that is great fun to work with. Done some training with walking sticks/umbrellas and 20cm sticks (forget the name, i'll ask).

Oh, and kick boxer vs. martial artist... depends on the art and the situation. In the ring a decent TKD player will be fairly evenly matched, but an art with good kick defence (eg. Shorinji Kempo) would make it interesting.

A master at kicking that uses his/her hole body for the kick much like Bruce Lee was working on can create a more powerfull kick thatn a Punch.

Don't get me wrong 300 pounds per square inch is a lot but kicks are more powerfull. I have found a problem with Boxers studding Kung Fu. Some Kung Fu styles moves use grabbing the arms. That is illegal in Boxing.

By the way Who would win in a MMA macth

Tyson in his prime Vs. Vanderlei Silva

I would say Silva I have seen silva get punched with some bombs and still make a take down and beat someone into tapout.

Silva Vs Tyson?

I'd still go with Tyson.... But it would be a good fight!

Man, Tyson has won matches on sedatives. ......
Crazy or not, he can still fight.

*raises eyebrow* depends on the style. Kickboxing is a very broad term, so is Karate.

The art of fighting without fighting is the single best technique
Sun Tzu. Also my favourite way to end a fight 👍

And how is boxing not a true fighting style.. is there a rule to this? If its not a fighting 'style' what is it?!? </tired rambling>

Did you see Silva vs. Hidehiko Yoshida in PRIDE GP 2003?

Great fight. Yoshida, a 6th Dan Judoka almost had him.

Yes you are right Ewok85 Boxing is a fighting style. Somepeople say that a true fighting style is one that uses all of you body not juist one part.

I would love to see boxing have only 1 set of belts you know one legue.
And Boxing should have different rule sets. A spinning back fist is illegal in the three big Noth American boxing legues, elbows are illegal to. Head buts are very dangerious but in traditional Muay Tai kicking boxing headbuts are legal.
I would love to see western boxing alow elbows and headbuts ingeneral all upbody techniques. Ok Biting is illegal :D

Vanderlei Silva has almost been beating before and no I did not see that macth.

Almost beaten?

He's been beaten twice. By Vitor Belfort and Tito Ortiz.
