The book contains five chapters that cover different aspects of Japanese society and structure.

1. Japanese history, from the first settlers thousands of years ago up through last week.
2. Japan's modern Constitution, its basic parts, and how those parts define the nation.
3. Symbols of Japan, those tangible or ideological totems—including one human—that define what Japan means to itself and the world.
4. How the Japanese government carries out its duties, and the role that residents play.
5. The Japanese economy, where the money for it comes from, and how the government divvies up the funds in its coffers.

Anyone with an interest in Japan should find the book useful, but I wrote the text specifically to help those who plan to live in Japan long-term. Most people want to be "productive members of society" wherever they live. Understanding the background of a country's culture and society will help make that possible.
