Internet connection in Japan

Here is a practical question...I will be grateful for any suggestion!
Which kind of internet connection is the most convenient in Japan? I'm going to move to Japan and heard that telephone costs are much more higher than in Italy. I thought to buy a pc (or do you suggest me to buy it there?) and to connect by attaching it to a cell phone (maybe such companies like docomo allow to connect at lower prices with your pc?), and my choice would be oriented toward a flat fee,which allows me to stay connected as much as I want (so I would avoid connections based on the quantity of dates downloaded). Or do you think that a home fix telephone line would be more convenient? it would be a rented one, because I plan to live in Japan for only one year. What are the expected costs of such services?

I to would like to know abit about this. What is the situation with broadband there. How much per month etc and how fast do they offer it.

Discount phone line--->10k-20k JPY
NTT phone line--->70k!!! Don't buy one from NTT!
Monthly phone fee->abt. 1.5k
NTT offers a phone plan without phone lines, "Light Plan", which costs you a bit more monthly fee.

xDSL--->2k-4k with its speed from 1Mbps-50Mbps
In Japan, all broadband accesses are price-caped or flat-rated.
I don't use P2P software or own my web server, so I am quite satisfied with my cheap 1M plan costing me about 2k JPY.
If you want to call your home country, it might be a good idea to choose Yahoo BB, for they offer you relatively cheap an international IP phone service as well. 23yen/min for Italy.

I don't know how long you will stay here in Japan, or don't know which desktop or laptop pc you want. When you stay here for less than 1 year and want to buy a laptop, I would buy and bring one in my home country considering its warranty.

You cannot survive without your moble phones in your daily life, and I suppose your daily communication thru e-mail would be via your cell phone only. You consider your mobile phone fee as well.

In your case, I think you should apply "Light Plan" to NTT for your phone line.

internet connection
Rather expensive if you connect your moblie phone to your computer and access the internet.

having a fast connection is a good point. i saw some offer 2 years ago (40M/8M) for ~$40pm. but it seems that the country has a fast network inside, but links to the outside are quite slow/poor :/
 
yes, people rely on or are addicted to Keitai mail too much. So I'm afraid that few people feel the wireless network more important.
It's like a very convenient pager in the US. You could not send messages from your pager in Japan, so Keitai mail has eaten up all Japanese minds, esp. younger ones.

The thumb imputting method would be obsolete like a pager here in future? Not sure.
 
Docomo charges a fixed rate packet data fee, and W-CDMA and EDGE is not really suitable for HTTP transmission. Yahoo bb and bb phone.

thanks to others providing info as well. maybe the administrators can consolidate these internet questions into a sticky thread or something
 
I live in dread of the day my ISP comes up with the idea of metering service and charging accordingly.
 
Never try and use internet in Australia then! We still have bandwidth caps...
