I'll try?

What is the best way to say "I'll try", in Japanese? I understand it has a lot to do with the context, and what you're trying to do. Any help?

You could say tameshite miru for "I'll try (it) out." Other than that, if you want to say "try X and see what happens," you would use Vte+miru (no kanji for miru); use Vou to suru for "try to do X."

E.g. Ano resutoran ni itte mimasu. "I'm going to try going to that restaurant." Or, more naturally, "I'm going to give that restaurant a try."

Nattou o tabeyou to shimasu. "I'm going to try to eat nattou." This gives the implication that you feel it will be difficult and that you aren't sure that you can do it, as opposed to just trying it out for the first time.

You can use がんばる to refer to yourself.
I'll try as in "I'll try to pass this exam." 私は頑張ります！

I think if you want to say, you will try out something: verb TE-form + miru

i'll try to eat, 食べてみる
i'll try to read, 読んでみる

In general kanji tend not to be used when in auxiliary verbs or adjectives. e.g. 信じがたい not 信じ難い 降っていく not 降って行く

Although it isn't usually wrong to use kanji in such situations it's probably best not to.

Those are probably not so bad as they are. You see with 降っていく the いく isn't a physical 'going somewhere' いく but related to ongoing activity. 降ってくる = Has come to start to (rain) whereas 降っていく is (IIRC) will continue to rain from now on.

With your examples you're actually going somewhere.

Even so though there seems to be ~7 times as many 持ってくる as 持って来る Google hits.

There is also "kokoromiru" for attempt or try to but that tends to have rather weighty or formal implications -- in business or science for example to try out new products, experiment with a new drug, try and take on a new project etc. Tamesu as a standalone verb is probably the easiest to apply grammatically, eg "Watashi wa tamesu" (I'll try), but it may also have restricted usages....

It really just depends what you are trying to say....言ってみたいことによって違うという文ですね。

Yeah, I suppose that tamesu on its own would suffice, but I was thinking of hearing tameshite miru ka when I answered the question, so I just went with that.

Some form of tamesu without miru is also extremely common....although unfortunately I'm at work right now and can't do the numbers.
