Ikea starts to accept applications for a 10-sq.m. flat in Shinjuku rented out for just 99 JPY/month.

Only one unit is available, and it is fully furnished with Ikea furniture and accessories. The company is accepting applications from potential tenants, who must be over 20 years old, until December 3. The apartment will then be rented out with a lease through January 15, 2023, said Ikea. The tenant will have to pay their own utility bills. Ten square meters isn't much, but Ikea say they have worked hard to make the most of the available area.

Applications can be submitted here:

Not sure I understand what the point is. Seems like a lot of effort for the amount of advertising they will get.

The rent is pretty questionable, the fine print probably requires you to stay in the unit for the duration of the lease and live off your prize winnings and charity for the amusement of others.

That being said, I am a fan of living small and efficiently. I just hope Ikea builds a more robust building than they do a couch

I imagine they will get an enormous amount of publicity, both for their brand name and also for the products in the rabbit hutch flat. Japan has many TV channels with producers trying to fill up their programmes as cheaply as possible and a large supply of shills presenters to make appropriate noises at the correct time, so I imagine this will be featured on many programmes over the next few weeks.

Big Ikea fan here, living in, on and with their stuff since the 1980s. I'm sitting on an Ikea sofa as I’m typing these lines. Couldn't be happier, and my 220 lbs have never brought any of their furniture down. 😄

I am imagining showup with in an apartment with a bunch of boxes and instructions. Want to go to the toilet? First assemble and install the toilet. Want to wash your hands install the bathroom sink etc. Same for bed, kitchen cabinets, etc. Then have it come with crappy tools lol.
