The "had never been" is past perfect (I believe) meaning that before whatever you say in simple past (in this case, you "moved to Tokyo"), there was never an occasion in which you visited a disco.

So far as I can tell, it's perfect English period. I don't see a problem with it in the Queen's English.

It's perfectly correct in any (native) form of English, nekocat.
