Found something interesting recently guys, it's called Firsty. It seems to be similar to Saily, one of the most popular eSIM apps, but one major difference is their pricing model, with the lowest tier being completely free! Yup, you read that correctly, completely free. All you have to do is watch 30 seconds of ads to get 30 minutes of free data! You can stack this so you can get hours of data at a time just by watching a couple minutes of ads. Best part? Even roaming is free, so you get global internet access without paying a penny.
So how do we do this? Well, first look for the "Firsty" app in your preferred app store, then install it.
Follow the setup process in the app which is carefully made to be straightforward and easy to follow. Now you should have an eSIM that you can use globally in over 160+ countries, completely free, or for a small amount of money a month, much faster data without watching ads!
I hear someone asking: but wait wait, I don't have a DOCOMO eSIM, what happened? Well first, your assigned eSIM can depend on your location, or it might sometimes be random. However, as promised I will tell you how to get it changed (guaranteed only if you are currently in Japan, but it may work even outside Japan).
1. Chat with support in-app or email the support team: [email protected] (you can use this email sparingly! if you must, but try not to, as it's the direct email for one of the team members rather than contacting support in general, and this can lead to excess load on one single support agent. He's just the one that helped me.)
2. If you're experiencing problems with your current eSIM, let them know and ask if they can switch it to a Japanese eSIM like DOCOMO. Being in Japan, they switched me to a Japanese eSIM automatically (from a European one).
3. They will have you force stop the app and uninstall + reinstall the eSIM, once you do that you will have the new eSIM which should hopefully be the one you're hoping to get! Keep in mind this may be largely cosmetic as most of the eSIMs will work anywhere, including Japan.
Hope someone found this helpful! Gone are the days of having to pay outrageous charges for limited tourist data plans. And now even the penny pincher can enjoy cutting their phone bill out of their life (you would still need a separate app like TextNow for a phone number), just by watching an ad every now and then. The free data isn't super fast or anything, at a max speed of 5 Mbps, but it should be enough for basic usage that wouldn't be best put on a WiFi connection anyway. If you're wondering how they can manage to provide this for free, they are partnered with Uber to offer this service free of charge!
