今日は雨です is kinda like saying "rain today," but it's acceptable and natural phrasing
雨が降る is the verb phrase for rain (falling), so you could say 明日、雨が降るようです (seems like it'll rain tomorrow) or シアトルで毎日雨が降るそうです (I heard it rains every day in Seattle)
Okay so what I did was individually find out the meaning of "rain" and "today" then just add wa before rain following today afterwards. I really don't know the answer but I just tried to figure out using the translator.
My sentence was more like "It will rain today".

haha yeah but I'm only at the part where you learn the 2nd vocabulary... not super far. I also spend my time using the Japanese apps on my iphone for more words. Another thing that I do is continue to master Hiragana and Katana, I believe I know them all but I want to be able to say what each is within 1 second of seeing it... I usually take 2 - 3 but I know what they all are. Also in a different app I started learning some Kanji's, I so far know 10.
So yeah i'm multitasking and not sticking to one thing, no clue if this is a bad habit but it's enjoyable learning in multiple ways.
EDIT 1: I use the apps because they are extremely useful when it comes to memorizing. Lots of interactive games, one of the apps called "Japanese" helped me master numbers in japanese and know some phrases.
here's tip you can commit to memory: わ is not a particle. The particle is pronounced "wa," but ALWAYS written は. As with all things, there's a TL: DR historical reason to this.
Keep working on that grammar, you can't just translate words piecemeal and throw them together in the hopes they'll form a complete sentence
