Hi,
1. 聞けば聞くほど皆がばらばらな症状だった。
I'm hoping this is essentially saying "The people I asked all had a variety of different symptoms".
a) Could someone remind me how the idiom used in 聞けば聞く(ほど) works, and what it means? I think I have seen it before, but now I seem to have forgotten.
b) Is ばらばらな used in the sense of "disparate", "varied"?
2. インフルエンザにかからん薬もないし、かかってすぐ治 る薬もないので、・・・
I hope this means, more or less, "There is no medicine that will prevent you catching flu, and no medicine that will (quickly) cure you once you've caught it, so ..."
a) Is かからん = かからない? If so, what style of speech is かからん in this context? I have a note somewhere that it is old-fashioned speech, but I don't know how likely that is here...
b) Does ~てすぐ mean "quickly after (doing something)", or is it a special idiom? It does ring a bell, but I cannot now exactly remember.
3. 「ええ、若い人の場合は大抵どうということありません から、学校や会社に無理に行かずに思いきって休んで、 暖かくしてゆっくり休養をとってください。
My guess: "Hmm, in the case of young people it [flu] is usually not a big deal, so/but[?] please don't force yourselves to go to school or work, be strict about taking rest, and keep yourself warm and take it easy."
a) What is 大抵どう, and which どう is this?
b) If the rest of the translation is OK, why is から used rather than が? To me, から does not seem to fit the logic of the sentence, in the same way that "so" does not fit my English translation.
4. Previous sentence for context is すると、アシスタントアナは、「学校閉鎖があちこちで 行われていますが、これからもインフルエンザは拡がっ ていくでしょうか?」と質問した。This I understand as "At this point the assistant announcer [from NHK] asked 'School closures are in force in various places; do you think the flu epidemic will continue to spread?'"
Then: 「あすのことは、風邪に聞いてみてください」と答えよ うとしたが、これも次のように改めた。
My guess: "I was about to say 'As for (what will happen) tomorrow (i.e. in the future), try asking the illness', but I changed it to the following."
a) Is this correct? Was this going to be a sarcastic reply, but the speaker changed his mind?
b) In これも, does これ refer to the reply previously quoted?
c) In これも, why the choice of も?
