According to Tochigi prefectural police, multiple assailants broke into the home of Eiko Tomiyama, a company executive, between 9:23 a.m. and 9:28 a.m. on May 14 to steal valuables. Tomiyama and her husband were home when the intruders broke in. Hearing his wife's screams, the husband called their second son, in his 30s, who was farming nearby. The second son and the eldest son, in his 40s, rushed inside and fought with the suspects. During the struggle, the intruders broke the right arm of the eldest son and caused other injuries, while the second son suffered fractures to his head. Tomiyama was stabbed in the chest and elsewhere and died from her injuries.
