Crime High school student arrested after woman killed in Tochigi home invasion

Another sad case of what appears to be a tokuryū crime. Tokuryū, short for Tokumei ryūdō-gata hanzai gurūpu (匿 名・流動型 犯罪 グループ), are loosely organised criminal networks whose members are anonymous and fluid. They are recruited online through social media, encrypted messaging apps, or "dark part-time jobs" (闇バイト yami baito).

On Thursday, police arrested a 16-year-old boy over a home invasion that left a 69-year-old woman dead and her two sons injured. The teenager, who described himself as a high school student from Sagamihara in Kanagawa Prefecture, was arrested on suspicion of robbery-murder. Investigators believe he was part of a group that broke into the house. Searches for other suspected accomplices were continuing.

According to Tochigi prefectural police, multiple assailants broke into the home of Eiko Tomiyama, a company executive, between 9:23 a.m. and 9:28 a.m. on May 14 to steal valuables. Tomiyama and her husband were home when the intruders broke in. Hearing his wife's screams, the husband called their second son, in his 30s, who was farming nearby. The second son and the eldest son, in his 40s, rushed inside and fought with the suspects. During the struggle, the intruders broke the right arm of the eldest son and caused other injuries, while the second son suffered fractures to his head. Tomiyama was stabbed in the chest and elsewhere and died from her injuries.

The attack last Thursday seems to have been planned over several weeks. The victim's family had repeatedly contacted authorities since April regarding suspicious activity near the residence. Relatives consulted Shimotsuke Police Station on 20 April, reporting a suspicious person on a motorcycle near the house. They again contacted the police two days later to report a car repeatedly driving back and forth near the home.



It is sad to see these perpetrators getting younger and younger.

She was a 69-year-old woman, for chrissake, how hard could it be to just tie her up? Did they have to stab her? It must have been because she surprised them and didn't know what to do. Or at least I hope so.

In the robbery-murder case in which a woman in her 60s was killed at her home in Kamimikawa Town, Tochigi Prefecture, police have newly arrested a 16-year-old boy from Kawasaki City. This brings the total number of arrests to four, and all of the suspects are 16-year-old boys.

The boy from Kawasaki is suspected of conspiring with the three boys who had already been arrested. Between approximately 9:23 a.m. and 9:28 a.m. on the 14th, they allegedly broke into the house in Kamimikawa Town and stabbed 69-year-old Hideko Tomiyama with a weapon while searching for valuables, resulting in her death.

Ms. Tomiyama died from hemorrhagic shock.

Previously, three 16-year-old boys from Sagamihara City had already been arrested, bringing the total number of suspects in custody to four.

All four suspects are 16-year-old boys, and police are continuing to investigate the relationship between them and how they became involved in the crime.

Four teens from Kanagawa, a 25-year-old woman and the alleged mastermind, a 28-year-old man, also from Kanagawa, were arrested in connection with the Tochigi home invasion. Police apprehended him at Haneda Airport.

More details are emerging: A young couple accused of recruiting four 16-year-old boys to carry out a deadly robbery in Tochigi Prefecture earlier this month were arrested on Sunday, with the husband detained at an airport shortly before he was due to leave Japan.


According to Nippon News Network, police believe 28-year-old Kaito Takemae and his 25-year-old wife Miyu were the masterminds behind the violent home invasion that left 69-year-old Eiko Tomiyama dead. The couple, who have a seven-month-old baby, were taken into custody separately. Investigators arrested Kaito at Haneda Airport just before boarding an international flight early on Sunday morning. Miyu was later detained at a business hotel where she had reportedly been staying with the infant.



Kaito Miyu had previously posted cheerful dance videos on social media and was remembered by neighbours as lively and outgoing. A resident described her husband as heavily built with a round face and an intimidating appearance. Miyu, the resident, had blonde hair but did not seem overly flashy. Both appeared a little rough around the edges.

The mastermind behind the home invasion in Tochigi has escaped to Southeast Asia, police reported. He first travelled from Japan to China after the crime, then apparently moved on again. Tochigi Prefectural Police are now working with overseas law enforcement agencies to track down the suspect, who investigators believe organised the attack from behind the scenes. So far, six people have been arrested in connection with the case, including Takemae Kaito, 28, who police described as the on-site director of the crime. Investigators said the fugitive mastermind was acquainted with Takemae and may have recruited him for the job.

The leader's suspected involvement was uncovered through security camera footage and an analysis of the relationships of Takemae and his wife, Miyu, 25, who was also arrested. A forensic analysis of seized smartphones in the case confirmed the fugitive had been communicating with Takemae using a high-security app. The investigation will focus on determining the extent of his involvement in the planning stage, and whether an even larger criminal organization is behind the attack.
