A big sun-filled greeting from the Japan Alps !! It's so nice to have you here with us in this great big, world wide family. I'm quite new as well, and believe me, still have so many things to get used to--and I haven't been able to send in an avator (?) or whatever you call it. It supposedly comes from Sanskrit (?) 'avatar' but I like your "avator." In fact I think it has the potential to catch on because it blends in nicely with other English words; captor, mentor, suitor, sculptor, actor, reactor, ...Mars Man said:

Mars Man, since you're from a distant planet and haven't caught on to 'avators' yet, maybe this will help.
At the bottem of the box where you reply to messages, click on "go advanced". That will put you on a new page.
If you want a little picture on your message, choose one of the icons at the bottom of the message where it says "post icons".
Then to the right, you may click on one of the "smilies" and insert them anywhere. If you point on one without clicking it, it will say what it means. Then click it.
I haven't figured out the colors here yet. But you can experiment. I hope it helps. I just figured out the avators myself and they're fun.

Hi, Mindy, Mars Man,
What Mindy just described so well are called "smilies"; they first started out with and later got expanded to include other more natural emotions like 'laugher' or 'mischiveous laughter' 
. They are also called "emoticons" -- for 'emotion' and 'icon.'
As for the "avator" it is a small pic or image that represents you visually rather than verbally. For example I chose a snail for my "avator" because I love snails. To choose an "avator" you can go to
1) top menu bar
2) click on User CP (control pannel)
3) 5th from top: edit avatar
4a) either choose one from what is provided
4b) upload a small pic/image that is 100 x 100 pixels
4c) or link in a small pic/imgage from a site by giving the image's exact address
5) save
You can change your avator later on, so don't panic if you don't get the desired avator on your first try. Good luck, and have fun tinkering with your smilies & avators !!
note: You don't need to be embarassed about mixing them up; a lot of people do that often, and I have, too, esp. when I'm busy or find out my slip of tongue too late.

I like snails too I have little ones in my tank - when you look very close you see their little eyes and they are so cute.
I also like your quote, I take it literally, as I dislike when people say fish have no feelings because I have fish and if you observe them enough you can sort of tell, when they are feeling a certain way. I don't think it's anthromorphic at all. But that's a different subject. So I may have missed the meaning of the quote because I can only see it literally But I like it anyway.

Good, the world can use another snail lover. Snails are so gentle and trusting; it seems they are also very peaceful, and can endure harsh living conditions. They must have a unique ability to survive all that. Esp. interesting are the slugs; those shelless creatures have chemical shields because they don't have the physical shells, and might teach us about enduring disease and contamination.
I had the passage for a class assignment; and for two golden semesters, we learned two things about translating a text. First was to be literal -- often times there is the temptation to extrapolate beyond the language reality and find certain esoteric meaning in it. Secondly improtant was literal context that helped to determine a reading when two or more distinct 'literal' readings were possible. Hence both as one literal phrase/clause/sentence/paragraph and as part of a larger context, the literal reading acts as the guiding light. Scholars like Peter Boodberg and William Shaffer strived to spread these principles to the English speaking world where mystifying tendencies have clouded many translations. Thanks for sharing your rediscovery of the principle -- I think that simple-and seemingly unglamourous way of reading is closer to truth than otherwise.
I too think the fish, snails, and other water creatures have feelings; being sentient beings, who knows, they liked Zhuangzi and entertained him just because they knew Zhuangzi liked fishes. There you go, pal; we love you, too. I guess the fish on the river Hao could have had those thoughts, and let Zhuangzi know of how they felt. How unfortunate to be separated from other species in feelings as Mr. H !

Thanks for all the hellos. It's interesting here too there are people from alot of different countries. That's good because I'm interested in the whole world, but it's too big to explore all at once! I look forward to getting to know you better. Japan seems very popular in the world.
I didn't know that about the chemical shields of slugs. I love slugs, and they have the ick factor because if you touch them they're so slimey & sticky. They come in many different colors too. We have alot of slugs here in Washington - it's a slug mecca.
That's a good perspective on literal readings. It's also confusing when reading literature, on top of that, the archaic words or words from different countries have different meanings. I wonder for example, when reading a Japanese story in english, how much I misunderstand because of the translation and cultural difference. And even with British writings, I'm finding out more & more words, for example, I thought the 'underground' was an underground movement of some sort, but it's actually the subway. LOL! So I read things into that that were totally wrong.
I think there's often power in simplicity. For example some of the Chinese poetry I read a long time ago struck me as simple, but very beautiful. Also say, the lyrics of the Ramones and such
Snails also seem smarter than people might think because if I put something new into the tank - they go right over and crawl on it - like they're curious or think it might have food.
Seems like an interesting bunch of people here - i'll check out the websites, like White Ninja comics and the rest. My guess is that Smurfs turn purple when choked, but I don't really know. We can find out if you like, heh - no I'm not really homicidal.
I'm not really very hyper Anjeko - more laid back really. But maybe I'm e-hyper. I write slow, but I type very fast, which may give you that impression. I'm also a compulsivly backspace and retype my mistakes. I think more due to training than perfectionism. But I find it quite annoying at times. However I sometimes find an interesting mistake that makes me pause - and I leave it that way.
