Help with translation and 果たす

Hello.

I just got a sentence from Naruto.

木ノ葉隠れの里、 忍術学校の問題児だったナルトは、サスケ、サクラと共 に忍者の仲間入りを果たす。

All I could do was:

"In the Hidden Village of Leaf, the problem child of school was Naruto, along with Sasuke and Sakura joining a ninja group."

I don't know if it's correct, but I really can't find where I can attach 果たす in the sentence.

Please, could you help me by telling me if it's right or not this sentence and where I can put 果たす?

果たす is the main verb of the sentence and 忍術学校の問題児だった modifies ナルト. Your translation means サスケ、サクラと共に忍者の仲間入りを果たしたナルトは、忍術学校の問題児だった.

Also, 果たす has a sense of accomplishing some task or feat that has great significance or was difficult, like 三期連続の当選を果たす (be elected for a third straight term) or something.

What are you lost about? His great accomplishment was 忍者の仲間入り. He'd wanted that for years and had a hard time doing it. So 忍者の仲間入りを果たした.

I'm not sure about something...
So, since I couldn't understand the sentece, I tried to break down the whole thing into 2 "main" sentences.

The first one:
木ノ葉隠れの里、 忍術学校の問題児だった

And the second one:
ナルトは、サスケ、サクラと共 に忍者の仲間入りを果たす。

And I don't understand the use of だった. Is it the past of だ, right?

My goal is not to translate things but understand how is structure and grammar of Japanese and even though I'm using 2 or 3 textbooks and I understand simple phrases and sentences I'm not able to get other sentences that are not totally complicated... That really makes me sad.

You are correct. だった is the past for of だ. That whole first sentence modifies ナルト, and means "Naruto, who was a problem child at the ninja school in the Village of the Hidden Leaves". I'm making up my own translation for 木ノ葉隠れの里.

Have you learned the adnominal clause, which is equivalent to the relative clause in English grammar?

忍術学校の問題児だったナルト
Naruto who was a problem child at the ninja school

ナルトは忍術学校の問題児だった。
Naruto was a problem child at the ninja school.


木ノ葉隠れの里 is from 隠れ里 "hidden village of ninja", so the true meaning is more likely 木ノ葉という名前の隠れ里. Thus, "the Hidden Village of Leaves" might be more appropriate.

Sorry, Toritoribe, I haven't learned it yet.

I presume I got confused because I'm used to seeing は near the beginning of the sentence.

And only now I saw something.

Shouldn't it be:
忍術の学校??

P.S. In Brasil, here, the translation for 木ノ葉隠れの里 is The Hidden village of Leaf. Just for curiosity!

The comma in the beginning can be said to be taking the place of にある, I'd say. So really you've got two modifying clauses at the beginning.
